Andy's Top 5 Tips for a Safari Adventure

KE's safari expert, Andy, has experienced both camping and lodge safaris and has explored a multitude of iconic safari spots including Chobe National Park, Savuti, Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve. Get clued up on how your camera works

You never know when that perfectly framed animal might just appear around that next corner and when it does, the last thing you want to do is fumble the shot.

Enjoy the moment

We don’t have to capture a shot of everything that moves, though. Sometimes it’s best to put our devices down and just be in the moment. Savour that lion’s intense gaze, or the sound of water being sucked up into the elephants trunk.

Listen

The guides have an encyclopaedic knowledge of everything you will encounter whilst out in the bush. Ask questions and listen to instructions and your positive safari experience will multiply.

Also, take a moment, especially at night to open your ears to the sounds around you. Frogs creating a lullaby to fall asleep to, lions roaring out into the darkness, hyenas giggling as they pack together, it’s all there, just outside the canvas or lodge walls. Your safari really is a feast for all the senses.

Take a buff for the journeys in the Jeeps

The 4x4 trucks are open sided, which makes for unparalleled wildlife viewing, but it also means that the wind and dust can kick into the vehicle, especially on longer driving days. You’ll be really glad of something breathable to cover your nose and mouth when this happens!

Bring a good book

If you’re fortunate enough to be able to read whilst in a moving vehicle, a good adventure tome to keep the stoke up will be worth its weight in gold on some of the longer driving days. I took a kindle, and as well as providing all of my favourite books, with the brightness settings up, it doubled up as the perfect ambient light to hang in my tent whilst getting ready for bed!
