Cycling Holidays in the Netherlands

Cycling is deep-rooted in the Dutch psyche, so what better way to explore the great biking nation than on two wheels. Journey through marvellous cities and glide through vast green countryside spaces, alongside peaceful canals and lakes.

The Netherlands' world-renowned cycle paths cut through the entire country’s astonishing landscape, providing the perfect and greenest way to see all the gems that the country has to offer. Cycle through idyllic rural pastures, past picture-postcard, quintessentially Dutch windmills and pedal into the peaceful Green Heart of Holland - a pleasant region of low-lying polders and meadows, often occupied with lazily grazing cattle. A cycling holiday in the Netherlands will provide you with the tools you need to explore this spectacular country in its entirety.

Places you Should Visit on Your Cycling Holiday in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is full of incredible villages, towns and cities that are rich in history and all have thier own unique charm. Here are some of our favourite places that you should stop at while cycling through this magnificent country.

Amsterdam

The capital city of the Netherlands is a must-see destination on your cycling holiday. Its iconic network of picturesque canals, centuries-old buildings and tree-lined cycle friendly streets, offers a delightful backdrop for exploration on two wheels. The city is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, boasting world-class museums like the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, which house some of the most celebrated art collections in the world.

Gouda

A charming city in the South Holland province of the Netherlands, Gouda is renowned for its rich history, cheese, and picturesque ambiance. The city's cobbled streets and historic architecture transport visitors back in time, with the stunning Gothic-style Gouda City Hall and the magnificent St. John's Church as standout landmarks. Gouda is also synonymous with its namesake cheese. No cycling holiday in the Netherlands is complete without sampling Gouda cheese, which is famous worldwide for its creamy texture and delicious flavour.

Dordrecht

Dordrecht, a picturesque city in the province of South Holland, is Netherlands’ oldest city and is a hidden gem for those seeking a glimpse into Dutch history and culture. With its well-preserved medieval city center, crisscrossed by charming canals and adorned with stunning 17th-century architecture, Dordrecht is a perfect place to spend the night on your cycling holiday. The city is often referred to as the "Venice of the North" due to its scenic waterways and quaint bridges. Dordrecht also boasts a rich cultural heritage, with numerous museums, art galleries, and historic sites to explore, such as the Dordrechts Museum and the beautiful Great Church.

Kinderdijk

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Kinderdijk, is a captivating village in the Netherlands that boasts some of the most iconic and famous windmills in the country. Kinderdijk's 19 well-preserved windmills stand as a testament to Dutch engineering prowess and their historic battle against water. These elegant structures, dating back to the 18th century, were originally built to manage water levels in the region, and today, they offer a glimpse into the nation's rich heritage of water management.

Middelburg

With a long history stretching back to the 9th century, Middelburg today still has a large number of historic buildings preserved in the old town, despite the heavy bombings experienced here during the Second World War. In the heart of the city lies the abbey and its 90m high tower known as 'Long John'. If you are feeling energetic, you can climb its 207 steps to gain fantastic views over the city and beyond. The beautiful Gothic town hall & market square are also prominent landmarks of the city; a weekly market takes place here every Thursday.
