KE's Guide to Wilderness Walking in 2024

At KE, we have trips designed to take you to the remotest places on the planet and active adventures that follow the trails that few have tread, well off the beaten track. It can be hard to decide when to travel and which adventure to choose so we've put together a monthly guide to wilderness trips to showcase some of our wildest adventures for 2024.

January - Costa Rica

Our choice: Costa Rica is well named the ‘jewel of Central America', with its tropical rainforests, active volcanoes, deserted beaches, colourful wildlife, perfect climate and friendly people. You can experience it all on our 15 day wildlife and walking adventure holiday.  Walk amongst abundant colourful birdlife, including the elusive quetzal and trek the slopes of Arenal Volcano & visit Corcovado National Park by boat. This adventure is designed to take you to the lesser-known places away from the crowds and main stream tourists, yet allows us to experience the best of this remarkable country.

January - Morocco

Start 2024 with a challenge and not only learn the basics of winter mountaineering but do it whilst summit the highest peak of North Africa - Mount Toubkal (4167m) in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. We include your crampons, ice-axe and helmet and all our Moroccan team leaders are properly trained in winter mountain leadership and this is why we know that KE's winter Toubkal trekking holiday is a superb experience, with a near perfect review score from our travellers.

February - Walking in the Maasia Lands of Kenya

Our choice: There is never a better way to explore a country's wild places than on foot and this walking and safari trip truly brings Kenya to life. Walking with the Maasai, we take a three day trek across the Chyulu Hills, wild camping along the way and walking trails usually only trodden by the wildlife. Passing Lake Magadi you'll spot flamingo and hippo and in the Loita Hills you'll stay in a remote tented camp and learn more about the Maasai warriors. Added to this are the show-stopping safaris in Amboseli National Park and the Masai Mara in which you are very likely to get up close to the big 5: elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino and leopard as well as numerous zebra, giraffe, antelope and wildebeest. This is no ordinary safari but an adventure that will bring East Africa to life.

March - Finland

Our choice: This winter activity holiday offers a true taste of winter, and an introduction to a variety of thrilling snow-based pastimes, right in the heart of East Finland's frozen wonderland. Our base is a series of small, cosy wooden cabins, in a little-visited area close to the border with Russia and just south of the Arctic Circle. During the week you will get to enjoy the peaceful nature and pristine snow-covered landscape of east Finland, go husky sledding, nordic skiing, ice-fishing, igloo building and more, plus hunt for the magical Northern Lights. Top this all off with a chance to relax in the wood fired sauna and you have the perfect winter activity holiday.

March - Sri Lanka

Our choice: With its emerald-green tea plantations, high mountain ranges, vast forest reserves, tropical coastline, and colourful hindu and buddhist temples, few places can rival the geographical and cultural variety of Sri Lanka. This two week walking and cultural discovery holiday in Sri Lanka takes in all the most famous sites and also takes us 'off the beaten track' to discover wild and secluded parts of this tiny paradise island. You'll trek in the Kandyan Jungle and walk through tea-country in the Namunukula range, across the famous Horton Plains to ‘World’s End, and climb to the summit of the sacred Adam's Peak (2243m) to catch the sunrise.

April - Reunion Island

Our choice: Wild and tropical trekking adventure holiday walking in the mountains of Reunion Island. Eight hundred kilometres east of Madagascar, the French overseas department of Reunion Island is a walking destination - par excellence! The far-flung volcanic Reunion Island, with its intriguing mix of African and French cultures, rises to over 3000m and its rugged interior boasts a network of walking trails which would not look out of place in Nepal. Three vast eroded cirques, Salazie, Mafate and Cilaos, dominate the centre of Reunion Island and provide the backdrop for this surprising walking adventure holiday.

April - Guyana, Suriname & French Guiana

A multi-country adventure through French Guiana, Guyana and Suriname - featured in The Sunday Telegraph - the three least visited countries in South America. There are only four great, pristine rainforests left on the planet and one of them, the Iwokrama, is explored on this unique journey to KE. The richness in flora and fauna is matched by the fascinating human story of these lands from penal colonies at Devil's Island to isolated jungle villages of the Maroons, escaped former slaves. Travel will be by plane to remote jungle airstrips, motorised canoe or 4x4 vehicles. A trip that will create enduring memories.

May - Cape Verde

Our choice: Located just off the coast of Africa, over 1000 miles south of the Canary Islands, the Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) archipelago is a walker’s paradise. With its rugged coastlines and fertile terraced volcanic slopes you will have plenty of days to explore four of these beautiful islands and immerse yourself in the islands' Creole Portuguese-African culture. Using award-winning Binter flights and local ferries, you will island hop between Santiago, Sao Vicente, Pico and Santo Antao, exploring the island's unique landscapes. This holiday is superb value for money.

May - Svalbard

Our choice: Sail on a 3 mast schooner with a maximum of 33 passengers to the most northernmost community in the world, Ny Alesund. The smaller size of your ship means you can enter the most remote fjords and each day you'll disembark for walking or snowshoeing in this awe-inspiring arctic wilderness. Sailing to a new location on most evenings, there's the chance to see the abundant birdlife, walrus, arctic fox and polar bear. A unique opportunity for the truly adventurous to experience this tremendous land.

June - French, Italian and Swiss Alps

Our choice: The ‘Best of the Tour Du Mont Blanc’  gives you ‘exactly what it says on the tin’ over 8 days. Making use of uplifts and vehicle transfers, this holiday walks the best and most dramatic sections of the classic circuit in the French, Italian and Swiss Alps. Daily distances and ascent and descent tend to be a little less than the classic full tour at around 15km. Each evening you stay in a comfortable hotel in the valley and your KE trek bag is transferred between overnight stops, which means that you only need to carry what is required for the day’s walk. This option is for regular hill walkers who want to see the best this classic circuit has to offer, but only have a week to spare.

June - Spain

Our choice: Strike out into the heart of rural Spain following the ancient pilgrimage trail of the French Way in Northern Spain. This 2 week self-guided Camino de Santiago walking holiday covers arguably the most dramatic section of the French Way, reaching the Crus de Ferro, the highest point of the route at 1500m. Completing the 315km from Leon to Santiago de Compostela, you'll be presented with your ‘certificate of distance’ in Santiago.

July - Corsica

Our choice: It may be one of the most challenging routes in Europe, but if you are tough enough then you will thoroughly enjoy trekking and scrambling the complete GR20 from Calenzana in the North to Conca South. As we follow Corsica's granite backbone down through the heart of the island, we will encounter a variety of terrain, which means that every day is a different challenge; whether it be hiking forested slopes, high pasture and alpine valleys or scrambling airy ridges and rocky outcrops. This unique European trekking holiday offers the perfect combination of Mediterranean sunshine, inspiring scenery and a challenging walking adventure; you'll be returning home with a real sense of achievement.

July - Slovenia

Our choice: A superb introduction to easy Via Ferrata and alpine scrambling on this hut-to-hut trekking holiday across the Julian Alps. We think the often-overlooked alps offer some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Europe particularly from the summit of Triglav (2864m) which you'll reach after an exhilarating climb. This itinerary is unique to KE and has featured as one of the Telegraph's Top 50 holidays for solitude.

August - Norway

Our choice: An exciting and challenging walking holiday, trekking in the Jotunheimen region of Norway. Known in Norse mythology as the Land of the Giants, the Jotunheimen is the biggest and most impressive mountain region in Norway. This is probably the best mountain walking route in Norway. Staying in Norway's excellent mountain huts, you'll trek dramatic peaks, glaciers and wild Jotunheimen landscapes. You will also climb to the summit of Galdhopiggen (2469m), the highest mountain in Norway, before spending a day roped up, practising glacier skills on the splendid Svellnosbrean Glacier.

August - Pakistan

Our Choice. A fantastic opportunity for the fell-fit traveller to take on an entry-level camping expedition in the spectacular Karakoram of Northern Pakistan. Discover historic towns and isolated villages, welcoming people, ancient forts, the newly-formed Attabad Lake, as well as a wealth of breath-taking scenery including some of the world’s biggest glaciers and mightiest snow-capped peaks. Includes a 6 day fully supported expedition to Rush Lake (4694m) with an optional afternoon extenion to summit Rush Phari Peak (5098m). September - Kosovo, Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro

Our choice: One of our favourite walking holidays in the Balkans is this amazing trekking journey through four of Europe’s most exciting countries with the opportunity to stand on the highest point in each. Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro and Macedonia offer a rich melting pot of culture, cuisine and history combined with spectacular alpine scenery. This genuine trekking journey goes right through the heart of the undiscovered Balkans.

September - Tanzania

Our choice: Summit success on Kilimanjaro is all about acclimatisation. With 8 days on the mountain the peaceful Lemosho Route is the trail to choose if you are able to afford that extra time. One of the quietest and most varied routes on the mountain, you'll spend 4 nights at close to 4000 meters before moving on to complete the final 2 stages to the summit of Kilimanjaro. A pre-dawn start on the last day of our ascent means you reach the high point at Uhuru Peak (5895m) in time to see the summit snows illuminated by the golden light of sunrise.

October - Peru

Our choice:  With 15 years running the Choquequirao to Machu Picchu holiday, it's now one of KE's signature "classic" treks. Over this time we have refined the itinerary to work perfectly, breaking up some of the longer days and using campsites that enable everyone to acclimatise to the altitude and enjoy the visit to Choquequirao and the pass crossings. We also allow a full day to explore the ruins at Choquequirao, so that everyone can explore the main site, the llama terraces and the recently uncovered terraces below the site at Paqchayoc.

October - The Himalayas - India

Our choice: Join us for a sensational trekking holiday to the world's third highest peak with an intinerary unique to KE. Beginning with an ascent to the crest of the Singalila Ridge, the high ground that forms the border between India and Nepal, our route conintues into mountain wilderness to the velley of the Prek Chu. It's at this point you'll make your ascent to the viewpoint of Kangchenjunga's huge south-east face. A brilliant travel experience, a first-class supported camping expedition and superb trekking in some of the finest mountains in the world.

November - The Himalayas - Nepal

Our choice: With a variety of different routes to Everest Basecamp, our choice for November 2021 is the classic route. It's a superb time of year to visit the Khumbu and you are normally blessed with blue skies and sunshine. With the best itinerary for acclimatisation, you'll spend 2 nights at Dingboche, day-hike to Chukkung, hike 2 short days to Dughla and then on to Lobuche, so you will be in great shape for your approach to basecamp. We hike to the exceptional viewpoint of Kala Patar at sunset to experience the wonderful mountain scenery of the Khumbu, before spending a single night at Gorak Shep and walking up to Everest Basecamp in the morning.

November - Patagonia

Our choice: Explore one of the most remote and untamed regions in South America and undertake the 'O Trek' - a hike of the complete Torres del Paine Circuit, considered to be one of the very best treks in the world. Prepare to be truly awe-inspired as you trek over the John Gardner Pass, walk up the dramatic Frances Valley and hike along the shores of Lake Nordenskjold, with the famed Paine Towers counting as one of the most incredible sites on the planet.

December - Jordan

Our choice: On many a bucket list, seeing the Rose-Red City of Petra is a once in a lifetime experience. We seek the hidden trails and off-the-beaten-track routes of the Jordan Mountain Trail, offering a unique perspective of the stunning wild desert landscape. Our approach into the fabled Nabataean city of Petra is via the little known ‘backdoor’, bringing us to the foot off the imposing Monastery; an unforgettable and intimate moment.

This holiday is also an excellent choice if you want to get away over the festive period with departures over Christmas and also New Year. What a way to celebrate.

December - Morocco

Our choice: Walk through the greatest desert on earth and sleep under the Saharan skies in a traditional Berber camp. This is an unforgettable Moroccan region, home to snaking wadis, dramatic plateaux, hidden oases and, of course, the sweeping dunes of the Sahara. The rich red Saharan sunrises can only be experienced, not adequately described. With ample time to explore Marrakech too, this is a wonderful way to enjoy an exotic festive holiday with dates over Xmas and New Year.
