KE's top hut-to-hut adventures in Europe

Hut-to-hut trekking is an experience that will stay with you forever. It offers a rare chance to explore remote mountain landscapes that are far removed from the world below and often in places that are only accessible by foot. These huts are placed in some of the most breathtaking locations, surrounded by peaks that so few will ever see. Whether you're an experienced trekker looking for a hidden corner of the Alps or a beginner looking for their next big adventure, there's a hut-to-hut trek adventure for you. In this blog, we'll guide you to our top hut-to-hut recommendations in some of Europe's most captivating landscapes.

If you're looking for a walking holiday that will test your limits, then we would recommend taking on the GR20 in Corsica, the toughest long distance trekking trail in Europe. Over 2 weeks, you will cover a total of 180km of Corsica's granite backbone, with approximately 12,000m altitude ascent and descent.

While this is a hut-to-hut trek that we thoroughly recommend, we've also mixed in six nights of camping under the stars, but trust us - this elevates the overall experience by avoiding the extremely busy refuge dormitories and adds to the adventure. We've also designed an itinerary to give you access to your main baggage on many nights, so you're able to enjoy more and carry less!

The famous Kungsleden cuts through untouched landscapes 200km beyond the Arctic Circle and has been crafted to reveal the most breathtaking places the Swedish mountains have to offer. On the guided ascent of Sweden's highest mountain Kebnekaise (2,117m), you will trek on well-defined paths through the remote Arctic wilderness and watch the indigenous Sami people tend their herds of reindeer.

Each night, welcoming Swedish Tourist Association huts await, where attentive hosts ensure the dorms and communal spaces are clean and comfortable for your arrival. True to Swedish tradition, many huts along the route will even feature wood-fired saunas! These are perfect to soothe your muscles after days spent on the trail. We are one of the few tour operators in the UK, and the world, who offer the King's Trail as a fully guided and inclusive package!

The ultimate, high Alpine, point to point trek is the Classic Haute Route from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn. The route takes an uncompromising line through the heart of the European Alps, from the start point in Chamonix Valley to the end point in the picturesque Swiss village of Zermatt. On this Alpine trekking adventure, you'll spend eight nights in classic Alpine huts, such as the beautifully perched Cabane de Bertol that opened in 1898, the Cabane d'Orny (2,831m) and the Chanrion Hut (2,642m).

Italian High Level Route

Stay in spectacularly located huts from Italy to Switzerland on the Italian High Level Route. This route requires an expert IFMGA guide who will nurture your group's skills on a ratio of 1:5 guide to client. Therefore, it's the perfect holiday for those that would like to transform their existing hiking skills to mountaineering.

Upon the closing of each day, you will stay in a variety of mountain huts, including the iconic Gnifetti Refuge (3,647m) and the new Monte Rosa Hut (2,883m) that the Swiss claim to be a 'showpiece' of modern mountain huts. Captured in the image above, the hut's high-tech aluminium shell stores power from the sun in batteries and can fuel up to 90% of its energy needs!

Trek the most scenic trails in the Alps from Chamonix in France into the beautiful Swiss canton of Valaris. This trail takes you through the spine of the European Alps, passing beneath 10 of the 12 highest peaks. Each night, you can rest your legs in overnight accommodation provided by small hotels, comfortable gites and beautifully located mountain refuges. The image captured above is the second day's final destination, the Cabane du Mont Fort, overlooking the truly dramatic Mont Blanc Massif.

Our experts have created a unique itinerary to cleverly by-pass the least interesting sections of this classic route. We've also avoided the technical section of the Europaweg, making this stunning mountain trail available to non-alpinists who wish to trek amongst beautiful Alpine scenery within just one week!

If you're someone that loves the Alps but wants to get off-the-beaten-track, the Queyras 3000 Metre Summit Trek is the walking holiday in the Alps for you. Our itinerary takes inspiration from the GR58 (the famous Tour of Queyras long-distance trail), but we've crafted a route that makes every attempt to get away from the main trail. From a succession of charming refuges and gites in the remote region of Queyras, you will climb around 1,000m each day across rocky summits and seek out the quietest areas to enjoy a picnic lunch. We deliberately venture away from the main route to offer both challenge and reward.

Situated at the junction of France, Italy and Switzerland, the glaciated massif of Mont Blanc is circled by one of the world's greatest and most popular long distance walks - the Tour du Mont Blanc.  The Ultimate Tour du Mont Blanc is our high-level option where you will hike the stunning Monte de la Saxe Ridge and traverse passes such as the Col des Fours (2,665m) and the Col de la Breya (2,401m). En route, you will spend  seven  nights in dramatically located mountain huts and refuges.

We recommend a beer or hot chocolate on the terrace of the Bonatti Refuge (make sure it’s at sunset to make your moment extra magical!) and the Cabane d'Orny, which has, frankly, some of most awesome mountain views in the world.

Challenge yourself as an experienced trekker to a mountaineering adventure through the Alps, with the purpose of conquering six 4,000m peaks in just one week. The Italian Summit Climber expedition offers the opportunity to claim Pyramid Vincent (4,215m), Balmenhorn (4,167m), Ludswighohe (4,341m), Parrotspitze (4,432m), Signalkuppe (4,556m), and the Zumsteinspitze (4,563m) all under the guidance of IFMGA mountaineers.

On this mountaineering holiday, you stay in the highest building in Europe, located near border between Italy and Switzerland and on the summit of Signalkuppe; the specatcular Riugio Margherita (4,554m). Climbing to this hut is a mountaineering dream and offers a balcony view where you look down on summits rather than up at them! Our top tip is to book early for this exact reason - spaces in the Margherita Hut are very limited because they are so sought after!

The beauty of the Tour des Combins is that there are so few people walking it - at the moment! We're one of the few operators to recognise this lesser-known side of the Alps and we are thrilled to provide our KE travellers the opportunity to be one of the first people to complete this relatively new long distance trail without the crowds!

Ascend beside one of the largest glaciers in Europe, the Glacier de Corbassiere to reach the Col du Grand St Bernard. Pictured in the image above is the lake on the Great St Bernard Pass and the Grand St Bernard Monastery where you will spend one evening. This originally opened as in the 900s to provide a safe haven for travellers and it is here where the Saint Bernard Dogs earned their reputation as rescuers of travellers lost in snow!
