The charming island of Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Island and lies just 100km off the North African coast. It's little known to walkers, but has a wonderful variety of trails meandering through pretty African-style architecture, and volcanoes so colourful, they resemble mountains of exotic spices. The island was declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2009 due to an abundance of endemic flora and fauna. Walking highlights include the Betancuria Mountain Range, the sweeping dunes of Aguas Verdes and a hike up the spectacular volcanic backbone of the island.
