Dalmation Coast Family Fun

Being KE's newly appointed “Family Product Manager” (since my return from maternity leave), I needed to experience a family holiday for myself. So on the 16th August I flew out to Dubrovnik to join our ‘101 Smiles on the Dalmatian Coast’ family holiday in Croatia. Our group consisted of four families with children from 8yrs through to 15yrs, making it a fun and interesting dynamic. Many people who we chat with on the phone ask the ages of the other children - trying to match their family’s ages to that of the group. In fact I was surprised how well everyone got on with the younger ones teasing the teenagers, and the teenagers looking after the younger ones when needed.

Out of all of our activities, which included picking figs with the local farmer on day two, a bicycle ride in the Konvale valley and a gentle 2-3 walk (which rewarded us with incredible views of the sea and coastline), one of the group favourites was the “Adrenalinski” park. An adventure park packed full of high ropes courses, archery and trampolines. However it was the sea kayaking to Lokrum Island, full of peacocks (including baby ones) that was my favourite day. It was day 6 of the holiday and we had speedily got into pairs for the double kayaks. Our guide handed out the lifejackets and paddles, and we scrambled on board. I paired up with Ella who is 11yrs old. She had kayaked a couple of times before but quickly took Josephs’ advice and she was counting loudly 1, 2, 1, 2 and we were cutting through the water swiftly and steadily. With little let up from Ella, we soon left the imposing city walls of Dubrovnik behind us and, passing some swanky looking yachts, we made our way to the island. I was impressed at how easily the children adapted and just got on with the kayaking. Ella and I pause for a rest with the group and enjoyed the peacefulness of floating on the water with the warmth of the sun on our backs.

Now we were nearer the island we began to hear the cacophony of the cicadas, a fantastic sound which reminds me of the summer holidays of my childhood and long lazy days without any worries. Coming into the islands bay, Miles (15yrs) jumps off his kayaking – go pro in hand. He has been doing this all week – so awesome footage to follow I’m sure. We come to the beach and all pile out of the kayaks. We have a couple of hours on the island and all head for a swim in a lake fed from the sea under the rocks (our guide brought a bag full of snorkels and masks for us). It was lovely to cool down in the warm waters. Bliss. The peacocks, and their very sweet babies make an appearance when we were having a sandwich, and all the little girls in our group crowded round and cooed.

On our kayak back I had a different buddy in the front of my boat, little Tom (8yrs). We searched for the best waves to go over and some big splashes soaked us and made us giggle. Unfortunately it is all over too quick and we are back at shore on the mainland.

Later, back at the hotel by the beach, we have time for a swim before a shower and dinner. Another splendid sunset turns the sky and the calm Adriatic Sea a beautiful pinky orange. I had a great week, and have appreciated what a great opportunity these holidays are for the children to explore the world and learn whilst having fun.
