Diversity on the Algarve

Isn't it just beach holidays, sunbathing and golf on the Algarve? That was the ignorance of my knowledge to an educational on our Timeless trails of Portugal’s Algarve holiday! I couldn't be any farther from that impression now.

Walking by the coastTaking a number of differing circular and linear routes originating always from our 'home from home' farm I enjoyed many parts of the Rota Vincentina, a long distance coastal path located in the south west area of Portugal in 2013. Quiet, dusty, rocky, and with a few steep inclines, the walking is relatively straightforward. It's varied as often flatter sections afford an insight into the harshness of the environment in the heat of the summer, and which I believe glorious in the Spring with the 'sticky' bushes coming vibrantly colourful with white and pink flowers.

The views throughout this series of day hikes are always fantastic and there's just something special about being so close to the sea which plays a major theme on this holiday almost every day. This is not only due to position but also because of our hosts, Violetta & Jon. Two of the most loving, fun and conscientious people I've ever known. They are also both champions in various water based activities such as surfing and kayaking.

Body boardingWith the walking being predominantly coastal based, what goes up must come down! But even that is fine as it's just a matter of adopting a steady and balanced plod. There's no rush here. Once you do reach the beaches you'll find many are hidden, and virtually isolated, only a fisherman or two having made the effort. Whilst others are fascinating due to the attraction of many surfers looking to catch some ‘Rip’. Don't forget your swimsuit as it's a must to be tempted into the surf. You can have a paddle, a swim or even body board under the guidance of tour leader/host Jon. To be honest I really wasn't expecting to have so much fun and so many opportunities at that for the water! If not at the coast, back at the farmhouse with its freshwater lake and zip wire.

Chilling at the accmodiationThe accommodation on this holiday is fabulous and secretive. By this I mean that the farmhouse (which is the main building) and the several uniquely designed cottages are wonderfully hidden away in a forested valley. You wouldn’t know it was there, and that’s the great story about how our hosts located it. There's an outside solar powered shower for those who dare to go bare…. it's that secluded! Location wise, you'll find this place peaceful, tranquil and simply relaxing. Sitting on the veranda sipping a chilled vinho verde, helping yourself to afternoon tea, or reflecting on the day in the hammock,Amazing Food you'll enjoy the countryside and the gardens of our hosts who grow lots of fresh produce. The tomatoes (salad items, pesto, sauce) and mulberries (homemade jam) are a particular hit. Food is always uber fresh, homemade, wholesome, colourful and delicious. I dare anyone to complain! It's just so tasty, gourmet perhaps an even better compliment.

This holiday is wonderfully balanced to make the most of the coast, the land, and of the accommodation positioning. Simply beautiful!
