Highlights from our family week in Poland

“The places we travelled before having children” is a common phrase that I hear being the Product Manager for the KE range of family avdenture holidays. Giving families the opportunity to travel again with their children, to destinations that they have visited in a previous life is a very satisfying part of my job.

This was evident in Poland on our popular multi-active family holiday which I joined earlier this year, in the last week of the summer holidays. I was travelling with a fantastic group of like-minded and very well travelled adults wanting to show the world to their children. None of my companions had travelled into the Tatras Mountains before meaning new experiences were in store for both them and their children.

I was joining four families in total. On a KE family avdenture holiday it is common to travel with families of all sizes, singles parents with their children, grandparents and grandchildren, aunties and uncles - the main focus for everybody is the same – if the children are enjoying themselves then the adults will too. The seven children in our group were aged from 8-15yrs, and I always find it surprising how well the younger and the older ones get on. Overhearing the kid’s conversation on the last night, discussing what they had enjoyed the most, was a particular highlight:

Eric 10 yrs: "Carrying the massive log up the mountain!’" (We had a day walk in the Tatras and Eric and one of his new friends choose to carry a log almost the whole way up).

George 11yrs: “The bike ride was THE BEST”. (On day 4 we embarked on a beautiful bike ride, on quite trails through the Chochowska Valley).

Lola 9 yrs: “Playing sardines in the hotel” . (Our hotel was a quirky small family run hotel very close to the centre of Zakopane with a garden which the kids could run around in. One evening we had a big bonfire here and a ‘highlander’ came and played some music and showed us how to dance...the Dad’s then cooked some sausages on the massive grill and the boys threw logs on the fire).

Thinking back to my highlights from this action packed week; I was surprised at just how much I enjoyed the jaw dropping visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mines where we spent over 2hrs exploring around the mysterious tunnels accompanied by our guide and her entertaining stories. I also loved our cook from the hotel showing us all how to make the ‘Peirogi’, the traditional Polish dumplings. The kids ate a lot of them that evening because they had made them. All through the week we also ate probably the world’s tallest ice cream in a cone, some slightly too chewy and salty local cheese and some delicious raspberries tarts.

What makes my job even more rewarding is hearing from families on their return and helping them plan their next adventure... already some of my companions have their next adventure booked. Some are off to discover the jewels of Oman in October ½ term and a few others are travelling to Thailand for a tropical Christmas holiday. Interestingly these are both destinations which the adults have travelled to before and they just can’t wait to experience them again through their children’s eyes – making new memories and friends.
