Tenerife - A lush surprise and 'summit else'!

The first view I had of Pico Teide was from the plane as we approached Tenerife. It was at first barely discernible, its snowy white peak perched atop a blanket of cloud surrounding its base, but its magnificent summit soon made itself clear and brought a smile to my face, as I imagined myself hiking up to the summit in a matter of days.

Gorgeous as it was with its blanket of snow, unfortunately it resulted in the park authorities closing all hiking trails on the mountain, and the Alta Vista Refuge to boot! Heading up to the viewing station on the cable car as a consolation prize, it was clear to see that the decision to close the trail to walkers was not unreasonable, as the snow was nearly 2m deep!

Changes to the itinerary notwithstanding, our local guides pulled a great week out of the bag, using their unparalleled local knowledge and never-ending supply of energy, enthusiasm and palpable passion for this island. Despite the unseasonable weather the island was experiencing, the whole group thoroughly enjoyed our walks in the spectacular Masca Gorge, within the rugged landscape of the old crater beneath the summit of Teide, and through the lush and dramatic terrain of the Anaga region.

It was a pleasure to be walking off the beaten track, experiencing a side of Tenerife little-known to many, as well as the warmth and hospitality of the local people.

A particular highlight was dinner one night in a cave house in the tiny hamlet of Chinamada, where we were graciously hosted by some friends of our guides with a delicious meal of fish stew and locally produced red wine. Dining on the terrace of this cave house, overlooking the surrounding hills and the sea as dusk settled into night, it was a special and memorable experience for all... Certainly it would not have been possible without the efforts of our guides.

Culminating the week’s walking on a secluded sandy beach, followed by a fantastic boat ride along the stunning volcanic coast back to town, the disappointment of not being able to climb Teide was long behind us. After all, we would all be happy to return to Tenerife to attempt the summit another time. It’s not going anywhere in a hurry... The next objective for weekend summit baggers!
