July and August are the the most popular months on the Camino, however this is also the hottest time of year. May, June and September offer the best conditions for hiking the Camino de Santiago, with delightful weather, reduced chances of heavy rainfall and a good number of fellow pilgrims to accompany you – all without the excessive crowds.

The Camino de Santiago is considered moderately difficult - you should be comfortable with walking 6-7 hours for consecutive days with some occasionally longer days. To show the relative difficulty of our walking holidays, each trip is graded on a scale of 1 to 12, with 12 being the most challenging.

KE's camino options can take between 8-14 days, depending on which route you take.

There are two main routes to Santiago de Compostela; the French Way and the Portugese way.

We offer the French Way in two sections, to allow you to do more of the trail over multple trips to fit within your time requirements.

The Euro is used on all routes of the Camino de Santiago.

This minimum required distance to qualify for your Compostela Certificate of Distance is 100km, however the Camino de Santiago walking routes can be much longer than this and take months to complete. The great news is that we offer the Camino options in sections which cover enough of the route to gain your certificate.

Camino simply means highway. Camino de Santiago (Highway to Santiago) is a title given to a network of ancient Christian Pilgrimage routes which all lead to the tomb of Apostle Saint James in Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain. The routes are also often referred to as the Way of St James for this reason.

The purpose of the Camino de Santiago shell is threefold. For early pilgrims the scallop shell was the perfect tool for gathering water or making a makeshift bowl. It was also worn for protection so that pilgrims could pass safely from neighbouring countries into Spain and Galicia during unsettled times. Today it is a symbol which unites pilgrims of the camino; a conversation starter and a reassuring sign that you are on the right path.

The Camino de Santiago Pilgrim passport, also known as your credentials, is a document each pilgrim receives at the start of their Camino. Along the way you collect stamps at hotels, cafes and hostels to prove that you have walked or cycled the required distance to Santiago to receive your Compostela Certificate. You must collect two stamps a day to prove you have undertaken the distance.

This is your certificate of completion. When you arrive in Santiago de Compostela you will take your credential to the Oficina do Peregrino who will present you with a certificate to show you have walked the Camino de Santiago.

Yes of course. Walking the Camino de Santiago is not only for somebody on a religious pilgrimage but for anyone. Although people still undertake the routes as a religious pilgrimage, many simply do so for the achievement of completing a long distance route. One of the nicest things about undertaking a long distance route, and in particular a Camino, is that everyone has different reasons for undertaking it and you will meet people from around the world along the way.

Depending on the way you choose and the section you undertake determines the amount of ascent or descent you will undertake but in general they are all relatively easy going. The routes are mostly on old mule tracks, wide dirt roads and quiet lanes through rural villages and farmlands.
