Overview

The marrying of mountain walking and an African wildlife safari is the perfect combination for a holiday in the ‘warm heart of Africa’ – Malawi. Our holiday starts in Blantyre where we stay on a nearby private reserve where we can enjoy bush walks to see giraffe, zebra and antelope. A brilliant beginning! The Mulanje Massif is our next destination for a 5 day trek to the summit, Sapitwa at 3002m. Our ascent follows local trails and past spectacular waterfalls that lead onto the famous granite boulders of Mulanje. Often shrouded in a picturesque mist, Mulanje is aptly named the ‘Island of Sky’. Moving northwards Liwonde National Park is where we can truly experience some of Malawi’s wildlife with game drives, walks and river safaris to see the beautiful elephant, hippo, various antelope and recently introduced cheetah and lion. And in Nov 19, in one of the world’s largest international wild animal translocations, 17 black rhino were successfully released into the park. After a glorious 3 nights we continue north to the sandy shores and crystal clear waters of Lake Malawi where we spend 2 nights soaking in the relaxed atmosphere. This 2-week holiday, in this friendly nation, will capture your imagination by walking in the less frequented Mulanje Massif, and the conservation success story of Liwonde.

This trip is perfect for those looking to combine the joys of safari, with experiencing the 'warm heart of Africa' on foot. During our 5-day Mulanje trek the trails are mainly good and easy to follow. The terrain can be undulating and rocky. The (optional) summit day is a long walk which is well-paced and an achievable challenge for regular walkers who are capable of scrambling and negotiating around, over and under boulders. The guides are very helpful and assist everyone over the boulders. This day is harder than the overall grade of the holiday and is optional.

The accommodation on this journey will range from thatched chalets through to wild camping. Some of the accommodation has a swimming pool as well as a bar and or restaurant. There will be little to no facilities during our trek camps and limited water available to wash. This journey is suitable for those seeking out adventurous corners of Southern Africa and wish to do a proper trek whilst at it.

Why KE?

With KE's years of trekking expertise we are one of the few tour operators who trek to the summit of Mount Mulanje (3002m). Fly into Blantyre and out of Lilongwe to minimise drive times when in country.

Itinerary

On arrival into Blantyre Airport in the South of Malawi we have a single timed transfer of approximately 1 hour to our lodge located within the Private Chimwenya Game Park. This enterprise brings together tourism, wildlife conservation whilst supporting the surrounding communities. On arrival we are out and about to enjoy our first glimpses of the beautiful African wildlife. In the park we can see giraffe, zebra and several antelope such as eland, waterbuck and kudu. There are also wildebeest (recently relocated here as part of wildlife conservation in Malawi) and jackal to add some excitement. There are no big predators such as lions and cheetahs so we are free to roam at ease in the park. Time allowing there are also additional excursions available (payable locally) for a bike ride or a game drive through the park.

As we wake this morning we can appreciate the peace of the African dawn in this tranquil setting. Leaving the lodge we drive 2-3 hours to Likhubula at the base of the Mulanje Massif. After refuelling with some lunch we'll enjoy a 2 hour leg stretch as a short acclimatisation walk to the nearby Lankhalamba falls and rock pools. Typical of our walk over the next several days, we head through dense forest which leads into idyllic scenes of rock pools and waterfalls that have felt untouched over time. Returning to the lodge we enjoy views to the distant Mulanje Massif, and rest up so we are ready for our first full day of trekking tomorrow.

Greeted by our trekking and support crew, after breakfast we ascend to our objective for the day, the Licehnya Plateau. Following a simple trail we make our way through the forest with views to the distant Thyolo plantations. More commonly known as tea, Thyolo has been grown in the region since 1908 as the fertile soils, regular rains and abundant supply of sunshine make for perfect tea growing conditions. Dotting the countryside, many colonial tea estates are still in full operation providing valuable employment. Continuing our path upwards and east we'll have views of Chilemba Peak above (2882m). On our arrival into camp we are rewarded with glorious views across the surrounding plateau and plains below. Time dependent, for those trekkers wanting a little more and depending on conditions, there is an optional 2 hour round-trek onto the scenic emerald green pool of Linje.

After a hearty trekkers breakfast we continue our ascent towards the distinct granite tops of Mulanje and its highest point Sapitwa. Our trail leads around the massif, where we are surrounded by a wild and dramatic rocky landscape. Enjoying a picturesque lunch with magnificent views across the plateau, our walk then continues to the Chisepo Refuge. From our camp we spend the rest of our afternoon relaxing ahead of tomorrow's climb and appreciate the far reaching panorama to Chambe Peak (2557m) and North Peak (2891m).

It is an early start for the optional trek to the summit of Mulanje's highest point - Sapitwa (3002m). Taking a steady pace, we follow a steep path with the objective of the granite peaks in sight. The exciting and challenging route involves sections of scrambling and negotiating fields of large boulders which we have to go round, over and under. The summit is not in sight until we are almost at this spectacular view point on the top of Malawi's highest point. From the top we are rewarded with views south into nearby Mozambique and further north in Malawi to Zomba Mountain. After taking in the views and some photos, we retrace our steps to our camp at Chisepo. This is a long day and is harder than the overall grade of this holiday. However it is manageable for most fit regular walkers and the guides are extremely helpful in assisting over the rocks, and it's certainly worth the effort.

We begin our return via an alternative route west. We first contour around and then follow the main water courses downwards on the other side of the valley. As we walk we have great views of Chambe Peak on the top of the smooth rocky plateau. We pass flowering shrubs and our guides will show us some of the colourful lizards which scatter off the rocks as we pass. As we descend off the plateau, we walk through the trees and back to the trail head at Likhubula, and the hut. This is a lovely walk for the last day of our Mulanje trek.

Leaving the mountains we stop on the way back to our lodge at the Satemwa Tea Estate at Huntingdon House, where we have a tea tasting experience. We will learn about the estate and the process of tea production. There are many different teas to sample including white, green, black, oolong and other Satemwa specialities. Some of the tea from here ends up in leading UK tea such as PG tips, Lipton Yellow Label and Tetleys. Satemwa tea is indeed, also served at Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck. We then continue back to our lodge near Blantyre where we have lunch. We are now familiar with this peaceful setting in the indigenous forest and grasslands of the Shira Highlands, making it ideal to relax after our trek. This afternoon we have the option to enjoy additional excursions available (payable locally), such as another game walk, drive or a bike ride through the park. Alternatively we can enjoy a beer, a book and a swim in the pool.

This morning we have an early start as we make our way north on the next stage of our journey through beautiful Malawi. We drive up onto the Zomba Plateau at nearly 2200m, the high peaks on the rim afford some of the most stunning views in Africa with a special micro-climate and a large biodiversity of birds and animals. We have a late breakfast at a hotel on the rim with these glorious views. We then continue the short distance into Zomba Town and visit the market with its array of vibrant colours and neatly piled fruit and veg. Leaving before lunch we make the rest of the journey into Liwonde National Park. We arrive at our lodge in time for lunch. Our accommodation is located on the shores of the River Shire, and one of the only accommodations in the park. The setting is ideal and truly incredible. From here we can enjoy safaris by boat, on foot and in the 4x4 vehicle. All of these options are available over the next few days that we are here and each have their own merits to see this beautiful park. We have the next 3 nights in Liwonde National Park allowing us to be truly submersed in the wildlife and the atmosphere of this unique place.

Liwonde National Park is one Malawi's conservation success stories. Taken over by African Parks in 2015 they have worked very hard to resolve the wildlife-human conflict, with huge success. In 2017 cheetah were reintroduced and in 2018 lion where also reintroduced. Both of these cats are thriving. Plans are in the pipeline to also reintroduce leopard - and then this will be a Big 5 National Park. These cats join a large population of elephant, hippo, crocodile and antelope including kudu and bushbuck. If we are lucky we might also spot zebra, buffalo, hyena and the critically endangered black rhino. Our day will revolve around our activities. One of the best times to see the wildlife is in the early morning, and then we will spend time at our accommodation before having another excursion in the late afternoon. The lodge decide if we are to take a boat cruise or go out in the vehicle. For those wanting something extra it might be possible (dependent on various factors) to go out on foot on a game walk with armed guard. This is an additional cost and must be booked on check in. A 'sundowner' (a drink whilst watching the African sun go down) is an important part of the day before dinner at our accommodation.

To ensure that we have time to enjoy all aspects of this park, and the activities that are on offer, we have another full day at Liwonde. If yesterday we have been out on the river for a boat safari watching the elephant cool down, the hippo wallow and the crocodile slip into the waters, then today we may be able to have a walking safari (at additional cost). Away from the river we can have a bush walk in the safety of our armed guides stopping to learn about tracks, habitats, birds and of course the wildlife. This afternoon we can go on a game drive or if we are lucky on a night game drive to discover the hyena, owls, civets and various species of mongoose. The lodge decide if we are to take a boat cruise or go out in the vehicle. There is so much to see in this wildlife haven, on the banks of the river teeming with wildlife. On occasion an elephant might wonder past our accommodation or stop to enjoy the river as we sip our sundowners.

Turning our attention to the jewel of Malawi, we head north and drive approximately 2-3 hours to reach the exquisitely tranquil shores of Lake Malawi. Our stay for the next 2 nights is at Cape Maclear. This peninsula into Lake Malawi was declared a National Park in 1980 and included some of the lake, making it the first freshwater National Park in the world. This is a unique environment of African bush, soft sandy beaches and clear blue waters. It is a haven to relax in the shade and the leader will discuss options for the next day such as kayaking or a boat trip to spot the resident fish eagles.

Today is yours to spend at leisure. There are a number of optional activities you may wish to do. Your guide and the staff at your hotel will be able to assist you with any questions and make arrangements for you. Lake Malawi has often been compared to the Galapagos Islands in its importance of the study of evolution. Please note that bilharzia is present in Lake Malawi and you swim at your own risk, please see 'Health & Vaccinations' for further details. The clear blue waters, sandy beaches and dense bush land that border Lake Malawi make for a very easy day in paradise before we enjoy our last group meal on this African adventure.

On the last day of the land only itinerary there will be a single transfer from Lake Malawi to Lilongwe Airport timed to meet the check in of the early afternoon departure of the Ethiopian Airlines flight to Addis Ababa.

If your flight schedules do not fit with these singled timed airport transfers we can provide private transfers at an additional cost. Taxis are also readily available on arrival.

Hotel contact details and an emergency number will be provided with your booking confirmation.

All meals are included except for 2 lunches whilst at Lake Malawi. This gives you the flexibility to choose your own lunches in this free time.

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. If you are on a trekking or cycling holiday, water is supplied to fill up your individual bottles. This will be boiled, filtered or provided in large jerry cans or 5 litre bottles. Additionally you should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water when in towns or where water is not supplied. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Food while camping and during our stays in lodges is tasty, filling and locally sourced. Breakfast will be cereals and yoghurt, with coffee, tea, toast and the occasional cooked breakfast. Lunch will typically be picnic style - cold meats, cheese, salads, bread, rolls and fruit. Dinner will be potjies (traditional stews), braais (barbecue), stir fries and pasta. Water is included throughout the trip, with the exception of when you are at Lake Malawi.

The accommodation on this journey will range from pleasant en-suite rooms through to wild camping. Some of the accommodation has a swimming pool as well as a bar and restaurant.

We have 2 nights at Game Haven Lodge just outside Blantyre on its own private game park, Chimwenya. Here we are in en-suite twin/double rooms. There is a swimming pool and it is a fabulous relaxing place to be after your flight and after the trek.

We spend 3 nights camping under the Malawi night sky whilst on trek. You will need to bring a sleeping bag. A thin roll mat is provided, but you may wish to supplement this with your own thermarest. There will be little to no facilities at our trek camps and limited water available to wash. The campsites are located next to basic mountain huts. We can use the facilities of the hut. Seating areas are limited at camp so during mealtimes group members can spread out and find a comfortable spot of your own. It isn't expected, but you may like to get involved with camp chores during the trek as this adds to the camaraderie of your holiday.

We have 2 nights at a mountain hut. This is shared dormitory style accommodation, mixed sex.

In Liwonde National Park we stay for 3 nights at Mvuu Camp. Here we will stay in family chalets. There are two rooms in the chalet each with twin beds. The bathroom is shared by both rooms. There is a swimming pool. Mvuu Camp is situated in a stunning location on the shores of the River Shire in the middle of the park. It is a special place.

We end our trip with 2 nights on the shores of Lake Malawi at the Cape Mac lodge, Cape Maclear. This unassuming hotel, with en-suite rooms is situated on the beach overlooking the lake.

All accommodation is allocated on a twin sharing basis. If you are travelling by yourself you will be paired up with another single client of the same sex. Single rooms and single tents are available at an additional cost. There are a limited number of single rooms available. Single rooms are not available for the 2 nights at the mountain hut. The single rooms at Mvuu Camp have a shared bathroom. If a single bathroom is required please enquire with the KE office, this will be dependent on availability and would be at additional cost.

The group will be led by a professional and qualified tour leader. During the trek the group will also have the support of a professional crew and porters. When in Liwonge you have expert local guides on the excursions.

Approximately £250-£300 per person (or equivalent in US dollars or Euros) should be allowed for tips, soft drinks, snacks, non-included meals and miscellaneous expenses. Alcoholic drinks, souvenirs and optional activities are additional so you may wish to budget for these.

You can choose to take your money in pounds sterling, dollars or euros, but USD is the preferred currency in Malawi. There will be the opportunity to change money into local currency on arrival at the airport and your local leader will advise the best places to change money en-route. Additionally, you will be able to get currency from bank ATMs in many of the towns that we will visit. Credit cards are useful and it is a good idea to carry one in case of emergency.

Optional activities:

Please note that these prices are correct at time of writing, but are subject to change without warning. All prices are in USD. Optional activities taken outside the KE holiday are at your own risk.

You will have activities included in your time at Game Haven Lodge, if you wish to do any additional activities here you should book them prior to departure, but pay for them directly to the lodge on arrival:

- Game Haven game drive: $12 per person

- Game Haven walk: $12 (1 hour) per person

- Game Haven bike ride: $14 per person

Mvuu Camp in Liwonde National Park, we have 2 game drives or cruises included for each night we stay. It is also possible to have a game walk with an armed guide. This is bookable on check in only, and dependent on availability with a minimum of 4 people.

- Game walk at Mvuu Camp: $25 per person

In Malawi it is usual to tip staff including your guide, porters, trek crew and driver if you are happy with the services provided.  We suggest you co-ordinate these tips as a group and as a rough guide we recommend each group member contributes around $100-130 per person for the whole trip.  The exact amount should be determined by the group. As this holiday has different elements (trekking crew, safari days and Lake Malawi), you should be prepared to give tips along the way, as well as the main guide and driver at the end (who will be with you throughout).

For this holiday you should take one piece of luggage, which should be a soft and sturdy duffel bag, and one day pack. On the 4 day trek your belongings are carried by porters, and we ask you to only take up to 8kg, which is including your sleeping bag. You will have time to arrange your belongings the night before, and leave the rest of your baggage at the start of the trek. You should bring a dry bag to pack your items in for the trek. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline.

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in the ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required, and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check for the latest advice before travel. For the most up to date information on entry requirements, please visit the UK Government website.

Visa Malawi

Most nationals require a visa. An Electronic Visa can be obtained online via the Malawi Government e-visa Portal. The visa fee is $65 for single entry and $145 for double entry. You can also obtain a single-entry tourit visa on arrival. Payment for visa on arrival must be in cash and you need to have the correct amount of in USD. To save time you can fill in the visa form prior to arrival (not essential).

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as 'adrenaline auto-injectors' are not carried as standard by KE leaders and staff. You should inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

VACCINATIONS

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you specific require any vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella), along with hepatitis A and typhoid. Malarial prophylaxis are required. A certificate of yellow fever vaccination is required if travelling from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission and for travellers having transited for more than 12 hrs through an airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dentist check up. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro.

Bilharzia, or Schistosomiasis, is present in Lake Malawi. We do not recommend swimming in the lake. If you do decide to swim in the lake then you do so at your own risk. If anyone does take the risk then a diagnostic test at your Travel/Health clinic can be done on your return home and tablet treatment has a good success rate if caught within good time.

The unit of currency in Malawi is Malawian Kwacha.

Getting some additional exercise before coming on an active holiday makes a lot of sense. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience.

You should be aerobically fit and comfortable with walking 3 to 6 hours for consecutive days. Hill walking, with a good amount of ascent and descent, is the best training. Running, cycling and swimming are also good for developing cardiovascular fitness and stamina.

The central region of Southern Africa is subtropical, generally being warm and mild to humid. Malawi has three seasons: the cool, dry winter season from April to September; the hot, dry season in October and November; and the hot, rainy season, from December to March. As we venture into the mountains, weather here can be subject to change and rain is not unheard of.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that before travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates directly from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use.

It is an essential condition of joining a holiday with KE Adventure Travel that you have a valid travel insurance policy to cover the cost of medical treatment and to protect the value of your holiday in the event of cancellation.  When taking out insurance please ensure the policy you choose covers you for the activities and altitude included in your itinerary.

For appropriate insurance cover we recommend Campbell Irvine Direct.  Please go to our Travel Insurance page for further information and to get a quote.
