Juniper Trust Computer Project

Computers are now so embedded in our lives. You may well be reading this on one now. Access to them is something that we take for granted but on a recent trip to Nepal I was brought down to earth on this.

KE Adventure has worked with the Juniper Trust since it started nearly 30 years ago, helping to work on low-impact sustainable projects supporting some of the world's poorest communities, particularly where children are involved. We have helped build primary schools in Nepal following devastating earthquakes, brought solar technology to remote communities and now we are helping to bring computers to schools high in the Himalaya.

On a recent trip to Nepal, trekking to Everest Base Camp, Juniper Trust asked me to visit a school where we had helped with a fresh clean water project. While I was there they also asked if I could scope out the computers they had and assess whether there was a need for such items. While sitting in the main classroom I looked around and found three computers covered in dust on a shelf. Three years previously, a couple had supplied the computers to the school, but given no training on how to use them or support going forwards.

The Juniper Trust, working with experts in early learning development, sees a huge advantage to a working ICT system within a school environment. It offers children the opportunity to learn in a varied way, developing new vital skills for a wider working environment. This project, funded by KE Adventure, has not only brought a new computing system to remote schools in the Himalaya but is also providing comprehensive training and ongoing support to ensure the computers are used effectively.
