Trek the Annapurna Circuit and Sanctuary

The Annapurna mountain range is the adventure traveller’s dream – winding trekking trails pierce through the natural sub-tropical landscape to reveal some of the most thrilling and beautiful places in the world.

North of the laid-back, lakeside city of Pokhara, the Annapurnas are considered to be one of the finest trekking spots in the world. The Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Sanctuary treks were amongst the first of the great Nepalese treks to come to the attention of adventure travellers, and KE first ran versions of these classics in the late 1980s. Since that time, a steady increase in the number of trekkers has led to the setting up of lodges on these and other popular Annapurna trails. Teeming with wildlife and pretty villages with neatly terraced rice fields, these trails take trekkers to awe-inspiring corners of the Earth with stunning views across the world-famous, snow-capped mountain range.

Annapurna Circuit vs Sanctuary

Although the Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Sanctuary treks are focused on the same mighty range of peaks, the routes are very different. And, here is a little bit of information that will hopefully help you tell them apart.

Annapurna Circuit Trek

One of the original "Great Walks of the World," the Annapurna Circuit is an undoubted classic and remains a popular choice for both experienced and novice trekkers. Starting in Jagat the route traces the course of the Marsyangdi River into a Buddhist world on the north side of the mountains. You’ll pass impressive monasteries such as the one at Braga and enjoy inspiring views of the Annapurnas from the north. Crossing the Thorung La (5416m) is the spectacular highpoint of the route and by electing to end the trekking at Jomsom in the valley of the Kali Gandaki we are able to offer this trip as a 2-week holiday.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek

Small but perfectly formed, the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek offers a taste of everything that makes trekking in Nepal special. Starting out from lakeside Pokhara, our inspired itinerary heads up to Ghorepani and the iconic Poon Hill before cutting across to the valley of the Modi Khola and trekking north into the Sanctuary. Along the way, you’ll see Gurung villages, terraced farmland, banana trees, bamboo, rhododendrons and grey langur monkeys. Higher up in the world of ice and snow, there are fabulous views of famous mountains such as Machhapuchhre (Fish Tail) and Annapurna I.
