Overview

This amazing family adventure holiday in Slovenia is based in Kranjska Gora, at the foot of the Julian Alps and minutes away from the Austrian and Italian borders. Formerly part of Yugoslavia, Slovenia has much more in common with its Alpine neighbours than Eastern Europe. Based at a comfortable hotel, with a swimming pool, we spend the week enjoying a variety of activities. On our first full day we hike up to the Martulk Waterfall, taking lunch in a mountain hut en route. Then, after mountain biking by the Italian lakes, we return to Kranjska Gora in time for a fun descent of the summer toboggan. No visit to Slovenia would be complete without a visit to Bled and its picturesque lake, where we manage to get our adrenaline fix at the 'high ropes' park! After a day to rest and enjoy the scenery, or experiment with other activities in Kranjska Gora, we drive over the Julian Alps via the dramatic Vrsic Pass. After lunch in the pretty town of Bovec, there's an optional rafting trip on the Soca River. A chance to try out some easy rock climbing and an afternoon spent walking to Jasna Lake, conclude this fantastic family adventure in Slovenia. This is a family adventure holiday with the ideal mix of activities and free time.

Suitable for children from 8 yrs old

This family holiday in Slovenia has been designed specifically for families and includes a range of activities. The itinerary contains a couple of days with easy walking of up to 5 hours, a morning of easy mountain biking, swimming in local outdoor pools and lakes, optional rafting and mini-golf and lessons in rock climbing. The biking is principally downhill or on the level. It is not strenuous or technically difficult and it is suitable for a range of skills including the first time off-road biker. The rock climbing and rafting are each pitched at introductory level and there will be specialist instructors to assist with these activities. Appropriate safety equipment is provided for all activities. Some time within the itinerary is scheduled for optional activities and sightseeing tours of the nearby stunning gorges and passes.

Why KE?

A best-selling family holiday for over 10 years, ticking all the boxes for active families with a perfect base for the week. This holiday represents fantastic value and be looked after by your awesome guides!

Itinerary

A single transfer is provided from Ljubljana Airport to the group hotel near Kranjska Gora, where your holiday starts. The comfortable hotel is located in hamlet of Gozd Martuljak, 10mins from Kranjska Gora. Here, we will meet our guide and have a welcome reception, with an introduction to Slovenia and a discussion of the week ahead.

Accommodation

Hotel with swimming pool

This morning we walk to the Martulk waterfalls. This can take between 3 and 5 hours depending on the speed of the group. The waterfalls walk is popular with local families in Slovenia because of the lovely woods that you go through and the hidden paths along the way. The walk is in two sections. We start up to the first waterfall on an undulating path to reach the Ingo mountain hut. We have lunch at the mountain hut, which has an open kitchen and offers homemade traditional soups cooked over the wood fire and further simple mountain food. Depending on the weather, and age and keenness of the group we can continue our walk further up the river to the second waterfall. We then retrace our steps back down to our hotel in Gozd Martuljak. In the afternoon we have some time to enjoy the swimming pool at the hotel or visit the town of Kranjsak Gora. We return to the hotel for dinner.

This morning we hire the bikes, which the leader will arrange so that they arrive at the hotel. We depart directly from the hotel on our bike ride to the Italian lakes. There are purpose built cycle tracks away from the roads, so the cycling is safe. There are different possibilities and lengths of track and the time we spend on the bikes and the distance covered will depend on the ages and abilities of the group. Cycling in this area is stunning with the views of the mountains in the open areas and cool and peaceful when in the forested sections. We have a packed lunch today so we can find a panoramic picnic site en route. In the afternoon we return to Kranjska Gora and have a few rides (3 rides per person included in the price of the holiday) on the 1500m summer toboggan run. This toboggan run is full of adrenaline and fun for every member of the family. We then return to the hotel for dinner.

Today we transfer by vehicle to Bled (approximately 30 mins). We start with an informative sightseeing walking tour around sections of the lake. The island in the middle is Slovenia’s only natural island with the 15th Century Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary. We will then transfer to the high ropes course in Bled which has a series of zip lines and tarzan swings to keep the children (and adults) occupied for a while! Alternatively we can visit the Vintgar Gorge (a 10 minute transfer from Bled). This 1.6km gorge carves its way through the vertical rocks of the Hom and Bort hills and is graced by the Radonva River with its waterfalls, pools and rapids which crashed loudly through the rocky confines. The well constructed path leads us over bridges with viewing platforms for the waterfalls and rivers and ends at the delightful Sum waterfall, the highest in Slovenia. In the afternoon we have some free time in Bled. There are many options available for us: we can walk around the town, which is known as a spa/health town, and perhaps eat one of the vanilla and cream pastries famed in Bled; or play mini-golf (payable locally at an extra charge); swim in the lake with the back drop of the 11 century medieval castle; we can take the small train around the lake and maybe visit the island. We have an early dinner in Bled and then transfer back to our hotel in Kranjska Gora.

Today we have a day to relax and enjoy Kranjska Gora. Today a trip to Ljubljana, the pretty capital city of Slovenia and the world famous Postojna Caves is an option (not included in the price). This is the second largest cave system in the world and we enter the caves by small train before enjoying a guided walk through this underground world. For those of us who would prefer not to visit the caves and Ljubljana, bike hire is possible, a walk in the local area or further fun on the summer toboggan. There is a pizza restaurant just across the river that we can go to for dinner if we wish.

Today is a lovely day starting with a transfer over the Vrsic Pass. This pass is the highest in Slovenia and in the western Julian Alps. With 48 hairpin bends we arrive at the top (1611m) where we have some time to stop, take in and photograph the mountain scenery and panoramic views before we drop down into the Trenat Valley. We stop off in Bovec for lunch in a restaurant before embarking on our rafting trip (optional, not included in the price of the trip). Our rafting trip takes approximately 1.5 hours and is on the world famous Soca River. Following grade 2 rapids along the river there will be time for river swimming and some fun and games on the river. If you would prefer not to go rafting you may choose to have a walk around the local village of Bovec or go on the Kanin cable car, a 15min walk from the village (not included in the trip price). After we have dried off we continue on to the Kluze Fort. The first fort built on this spot was made of wood and was erected in the 15th century to prevent the Turkish invasion on Carinthia. The fort was later rebuilt and has served in many battles and wars including the incursion of Napoleon and the Great War. The castle houses many exhibitions, events and festivals. We return to Kransjka Gora and our hotel via Italy.

TRAVEL TO YOUR DESTINATION

If flying from the UK there are low cost airlines available to the start and from the end of your holiday.

To benefit from full financial protection, ease your holiday planning, and avoid dealing with airlines, we can book scheduled flights from the UK as part of a flight inclusive package. Scheduled flights are usually more expensive that low cost alternatives, however potentially less stressful if your flight is cancelled or delayed. If you book flights through KE Adventure Travel we will offset the carbon of your flight.

The group will meet at the hotel in Kranjska Gora.

A single transfer from Ljubljana Airport to the group hotel is provided in the early evening of Day 1 of the Land Only itinerary.

On the last day of the Land Only itinerary, there will be a single transfer to Ljubljana for flights departing in the evening.

Anyone may join the group transfers by prior arrangement. Travelling as a group or on public transport saves energy. If this is not practical, we can provide private transfers at an additional cost.

Hotel contact details and an emergency number will be provided with your booking confirmation.

All breakfasts, 2 lunches and 5 dinners are included in the holiday price. 4 lunches and 2 dinners will need to be purchased. 1 dinner will be in Bled and the other can be taken at the pizza restaurant just a 5-10min walk over the new river bridge. Meals are around €10 per person.

Water from the taps may not be drinkable in all locations on this trip - please check with your guide. We recommend taking water purification tablets and a reusable bottle with a filter such as Water-to-Go, which can both be used to help make safe other water sources. Please note that we do not encourage the purchase of single use plastic bottles.

Breakfasts are continental style and usually consist of bread with a selection of meats, cheeses, fruit, and sometimes eggs. Tea, coffee and fruit juice. A picnic/packed lunch or lunch at a local establishment are available. A variety of local and international dishes are served for dinner at the hotel restaurant.  Please inform KE in advance if you have any special dietary requirements.

During this trip the group will spend 7 nights in a comfortable family-friendly hotel near to Kranjska Gora, in the hamlet of Gozd Martuljek. The hotel has stunning views of the mountains. The hotel is set in it's own grounds away from the road and has a small indoor pool. It is in walking distance (20-30 minutes along a safe walking path) to Kranjska Gora, but a free, hourly shuttle bus is provided as well.

There are two sections at the hotel, one with 3-star rooms and the other with 4-star rooms. As standard, we stay in the 3-star en-suite rooms, which are twin or a family quadruple room (for families of 3 or 4) with bunk beds.

It is possible to upgrade to the 4-star rooms. These bigger rooms are twin/double, have a balcony and are interlinking. The additional cost is £225 per person (adult or child) to upgrade to 4star. Limited 4-star rooms are available and the prices are subject to change. Please ensure you request this at time of booking.

The group will be accompanied by a local English-speaking professional guide throughout the trip. There will be additional specialist instructors during the rock climbing and rafting sessions.

This holiday does not involve any significant ascent to altitude and we would not expect any altitude issues with this trip.

Approximately €300-400 per family (2 adults & 2 children) should be allowed for tips, soft drinks, snacks, non-included meals and miscellaneous expenses. Alcoholic drinks, souvenirs and optional activities are additional so you may wish to budget for these. There will be the opportunity to change money into Euros on arrival at the airport, and cash can be withdrawn from ATM’s in Kranjska Gora and Bled. Credit cards are useful and it is a good idea to carry one in case of emergency.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Please note that these prices are correct at time of writing, but are subject to change without warning. All prices are in Euros. Optional activities taken outside the KE holiday are at your own risk.

  • Entrance to Aqua pool in Kranjska Gora: €10-15 per person
  • Bike hire in Kranjska Gora (day 5): €10-15 per day, per person
  • Additional summer toboggan rides: €8 adult, €6.5 child per ride
  • Rafting: €50 per person (adult & child the same)
  • Postojna Cave visit: €250 for mini-van/bus for excursion, max 8 people. Entry fees not included
  • Day trip to Ljubljana: €200 for mini-van/bus for day trip, max 8 people

We suggest you give a tip to your guide if you are satisfied with their services. This is probably best done as a group pooling something around €10 per family member.

For this holiday you should take one piece of luggage and a daypack. Luggage with wheels is useful for this holiday. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline.

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in the ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

Europe

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)

  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For the latest details on visiting countries within the EU or the European Economic Area (EEA), please check the UK Government website

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required, and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check for the latest advice before travel. For the most up to date information on entry requirements, please visit the UK Government website.

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as 'adrenaline auto-injectors' are not carried as standard by KE leaders and staff. You should inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

Vaccinations

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations.

GHIC / Medical cover

UK residents should carry a free Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). This entitles you to state provided medical treatment when you're visiting an EU country or Switzerland. This is not a substitute for medical travel insurance which is vital when travelling overseas.

The currency for part or all of this holiday is the Euro.

From May to October the weather is generally very good, with mainly clear and sunny days. We can expect daytime temperatures in Kranjska Gora to be around 20°C in May and October and rather warmer than this in July and August, at 25°C. As with any mountain area there is the risk of some poor weather, with rain and wind.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that before travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates directly from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use.

We welcome all family dynamics and we will try to accommodate you in the roomings of your choice. The only stipulation for joining a family group holiday is that 1 party member is 17yrs or under, and they are accompanied by an adult. An average group size is around 10 members in total. Further general information and FAQ's are available here: KE Family Adventure Holidays general information.

It is an essential condition of joining a holiday with KE Adventure Travel that you have a valid travel insurance policy to cover the cost of medical treatment and to protect the value of your holiday in the event of cancellation.  When taking out insurance please ensure the policy you choose covers you for the activities and altitude included in your itinerary.

For appropriate insurance cover we recommend Campbell Irvine Direct.  Please go to our Travel Insurance page for further information and to get a quote.

Please try to keep the weight of your baggage to a minimum. See the ‘baggage allowance’ section for further details.

You should bring the following items:

  • Hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes

STUNNING COUNTRY, FANTASTIC ACTIVITIES, GLORIOUS WATER, DELICIOUS CAKE! ★★★★★

Our party of 3 was made up of my 45 yo self, my 68 yo mum and my 9 yo son. We were all blown away by the beauty of Slovenia and the superb range of activities provided. Our guides Masha and Hana were both fantastically knowledgeable, motivational, attentive and just generally "nice". They truly made everything seemless. I had not appreciated what a massive benefit it was to have someone else do all the planning, timings and driving (especially the 50 hair pin bends over the Vrisc Pass) ! It was great having the flexibility to take part in activities or just sit and watch when needed. We had upgraded to have 2 adjoining rooms in the 4 star mountain facing side of hotel, and did not regret that expense. The hotel itself is nice enough, be prepared to be a bit fed up of the evening meals by the end of the week! The restaurants chosen by the guides for lunch were all delicious and in fabulous settings (my favourite was after Bohinj Lake). We were with 2 other families and everyone got on well. All of the activities were superb. My 9 yo is already asking when we can go white water rafting again. I am already missing the fantastic lake swimming. My mum is missing the glorous views across the mountains. I would 100% recommend this holiday to anyone looking for a bit of adventure!

Great family outdoor adventure ★★★★★

Family of 5 (kids 8, 10, 12), first time booking a fully organised adventure holiday. A friendly call with KE team 2 weeks before departure and we were set to go. The days were brilliant, a good balance of activity with very little travelling. I think all the families left the holiday totally smitten with the outdoors of Slovenia. Our guides, Ales and Jernij, were fantastic, funny, encouraging and professional, the kids are already missing them. A holiday with like-minded families and similar ag ed children, created the perfect recipe for new friends and great memories; totally recommend this holiday. Hotel: stayed in the 3* section, food was fine, rooms clean & basic, swimming pool(s) great, good play areas for the kid to enjoy in the evening. Only feedback, the beds were OK, lacked a bit of comfort. Optional things to bring: if you like tea bring your own tea bags, padded cycling shorts, walkie-talkies What we didn’t need: water purifiers or torches

Fantastic holiday packed with activities ★★★★★

Ales and Jernij our guides were fantastic! Fully engaged in making the holiday as amazing as possible. They were brilliant with the children ( 11 & 9 years ) who both had a great time. Lots of different activities all as described but on different days to minimise any impact by the weather. We loved this holiday, our children are adventurous and this ticked all the boxes, Impossible to choose a “best day” as all so good!

Fantastic Family Fun in a Beautiful Country
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I choose KE adventure holidays because I feel they put together a programme of activities and give you an insight into the country you are visiting that it would be incredibly difficult to put together yourself and this holiday did not disappoint. David and Ales were fantastic guides - kind, supportive, flexible and funny. They were brilliant with the group on the activities, going out of their way to make sure everyone had a great time. Our family's favourites were the white water rafting, mountain biking, high ropes and grass toboggan. I am ashamed to admit I knew very little about Slovenia before I arrived but they imparted so much knowledge on history, music, customs and everything Slovenian .... and it is a truly beautiful country. They also made changes to the itinerary based on the weather, group's ability or our requests, to make sure everyone got the best experience possible during the week. Top marks to David for going above and beyond when he completed a 3 hour round trip to collect my daughter's forgotten bag with all her kit in on our last day!! On a practical note bring cycling shorts if you have them and we didn't need any base layers or special shoes for the white water rafting - it was all provided. We just wore swimming costumes under the kit provided. Also be prepared - everyone challenged themselves on this holiday - we were tired after the activities although incredibly satisfied.

Well organised, super fun for all the family
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This was our first time with KE Adventures. The whole holiday, from webchatting, through to booking and then travelling was top notch and all went very smoothly. It made the holiday effort-free (apart from the physical aspect of some of the activities!) and therefore relaxing from start to finish. The Hotel Spik was in a fantastic location in the alps. There's a campsite next to it, with a handy mini-market there, plus a childrens' low ropes course. We upgraded to the 4* rooms, which w ere much more modern, spacious and had a balcony and mini-bar (useful fridge for chilling water bottles and beers!) No tea and coffee facilities though, which was much missed. Maybe take a travel kettle if you like a regular cuppa. We managed to get adjoining rooms for us and our daughter. The food was buffet and plentiful choice. But note, no English breakfast tea at breakfast until the weekends! So if you need a morning cuppa, take your own! Swimming pool area was lovely, great pools and jacuzzi open 9am-9pm, plenty of reclining chairs for all. A nice terrace outside the pool for sunny days. Extra charge for sauna/steam rooms. Charge for towels (we took sporty lightweight towels, easy to dry). Spa treatments rooms on 4th floor - We had a massage on the last day and it was excellent. Drinks in the hotel were reasonable. You can drink the tap water in your room. But they will not provide tap water in the dining room at dinner time. You have to buy bottled water, quite expensive at 2.5euro for 500ml. There is plenty of water at breakfast, ionized and flavoured with citric fruit, lovely. The staff were helpful, English generally good. Our KE guides were great. A little formal and serious to start with (I think that's a Slovenian trait), but they soon got to know us and they were excellent. Their local knowledge was great. Nothing was too much trouble to ask. They were available at all times, even when they had left the hotel they were happy to us to call them if necessary. All the activities were superb and so well organised. The walk direct from the hotel up to see the waterfalls was amazing. Quite challenging in places, but an easy pace. You get to refill your water bottles from a mountain stream pump. The youngest member of our group was 10, and did find this walk quite hard, but still managed a swim in the pool at the end of the day! The white water rafting was our highlight. Exciting, slightly terrifying (I was sitting at the front!), but a fabulous achievement for me especially as I didn't think I would be brave enough to do it! We didn't need base layers, as it was 30 degrees that day. You don't need your own shoes either, you get given a pair of boots, plus sleeveless full length wetsuits and a life jacket and helmet. The water is 12 degrees so pretty fresh. Didn't need warm hats or gloves or waterproof trousers either. We did take waterproof jackets out with us each day, and used them a couple of times as the weather can change very quickly, even in August. All in all a fabulous holiday and we would definately book with KE again.

Fun for all the family in the Julian Alps
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Mum, Dad and 8 year old son thoroughly enjoyed all the activities on offer. All the activities were of an equally high standard, including the optional rafting, which we think should be included in the full trip price. Quality of service from tour guides was exceptional - fun and knowledgeable guys (David and Ales). Every day is action-packed and can be tiring. However, the hotel pool was a great end to the day. Plenty of decent food at buffet breakfast and dinner, with something to suit most ta stes. Top tips - bring sturdy boots/trainers for walking, cycling shorts and suntan lotion! Would recommend for an adventure-seeking family.

Fantasic family fun!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Our family of 5 (aged 11, 14, 18, and too old to mention) have just returned from the Julien Alps. This holiday ticked all the boxes for us and a couple more. The activities put on were varied, fun and challenging enough to leave us with a sense of satisfaction and slightly aching limbs at the end of each day. Our guides were wonderful and went above and beyond what was required. The spectacular scenary provides an inspiring backdrop to some exhilarating family fun.

Breathtaking scenery and outstanding activities
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Our family adventure was simply perfect. The scenery throughout the entire trip was breathtakingly beautiful, from the snow capped mountains to the emerald-green rivers and lakes. Our guide, David, was amazing. So friendly, enthusiastic and fun, we all loved him! It was certainly an active week - the high ropes offered several different levels to keep everyone happy, the rock climbing was challenging enough for my 2 who are fairly experienced climbers but David and his brother were so supportive with those of us who were a little less certain on the rocks. The cycling, the white water rafting, the summer toboggan were all brilliant fun as well. Tips....we were lucky with the weather so if you go in October take plenty of layers as it can be very cold early in the morning. No need to take wet shoes for rafting as the company supply proper boots. Also the 'base layer' is actually just a swimming costume for the rafting (though the base layer was useful as an extra layer for the kids on other days). Me and my 2 kids loved every single second of this trip and would wholeheartedly recommend it. Thank you!!

Fabulous programme of activites in wonderful location
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
We all loved the activites organised by our guides, and the pace was good. The guides were fun, enthusiastic and also professional. They encouraged everyone to challenge themselves, but not too much! They helped out if anyone struggled.
I fail to find a favourite - from the hike on the first day, the mountain biking, summer toboggan, white water rafting, rock climbing and high ropes plus a swim in lake Bled to finish off - such memorable experiences; we loved them all!
My only
criticism was that we had a substantial buffet breakfast and buffet dinner at the hotel, and on three days, we ate out at local restaurants and had four course meals - it was simply too much, and I felt, rather a waste of food (we couldn't eat it all) and time. On one day we lost an opportunity to swim in lake Bled. The sun was out, a picnic would have been perfect, but by the time we had sat through four courses of unnecessary food, it was pouring with rain!

Wonderful and memorable new experiences for all the family
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
So many amazing new experiences. There was great variety of activities with enough time to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. We were all challenged at different times during the holiday and there was a great sense of achievement in succeeding and completing the activities. Our guide Nina could not have been more helpful throughout the holiday - she was cheerful and easy going. Bring comfortable sports shoes and clothes. The hotel was very helpful at catering for our 2 coeliac children and went to great efforts to ensure they were well catered and looked after.

A very varied activity holiday
★ ★ ★ ★
Ales and Nina were excellent trip leaders who worked very well with the children. They were very patient and knew just how far to push/encourage them. Adults were also challenged! Expect a full-on week. The days were always busy. If you are looking for plenty of chill-out time this trip probably isn't for you! Bear in mind the actual days of the itinerary may be changd to make the most of the weather. Make sure you book the white water rafting. Nearly everyone said this was the highlight of their trip. We would recommend this for people looking for plenty of action experiences.
