Overview

Located on one of Italy’s most beautiful coastlines, the charming region of Liguria is nestled between the Alps, Apennines and the Ligurian Sea. This pretty area is home to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Cinque Terre, a beautiful national park of rolling hills, fairy-tale towns and villages, bustling harbours and and excellent cuisine! Staying in the coastal town of Moneglia on the Riviera di Levante, we’ll explore Liguria with a series of easy walks and train journeys to villages accessible only by sea, rail or foot! We start by walking through fragrant pine trees to the fishing village of Portofino with its pastel coloured houses and vibrant harbour. Next we explore the picture-postcard Cinque Terre or “Five Earths” - Vernazza, Monterosso, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. These exquisite villages are architectural treasures offering a rich kaleidoscope of colour as they cling to the coast in an almost fairy-tale setting.

After the Cinque Terre we’ll hike along the spectacular Punta Baffe before walking from Levanto’s castle to pretty Monterosso al Mare. Finally we take a boat trip to the UNESCO-designated island of Palmaria and stroll through Portovenere. Situated on the “Gulf of Poets,” Portovenere was home to Lord Byron and the English romantic poet, Shelley. Alongside daily walks there will be time for relaxing with “gelato,” chilled Limoncino or a strong cappuccino with almond biscotti. Picnic lunches include local ingredients, whilst incldued evening meals are taken in the excellent hotel restaurant which is family-run and specialises in Ligurian dishes. If you’re looking for a walking holiday on one of Italy’s most beautiful coasts with easy walks, tasty food and train journeys through a beautiful region, then this is the perfect choice.

Looking for a two week holiday?

Fancy the ultimate Italian walking and food experience?  For a complete centre-based Italian experience, why not combine our Footpaths and Flavours of Liguria with our one week Walking Wild Tuscany  Many of our dates work back to back and with both holidays beginning and ending at Pisa Airport it really couldn't be simpler.

This holiday is centre-based with a series of days walks designed to explore the best of the area. The majority of places we visit are only accessible by boat, rail or on foot therefore part of the holiday experience will be using the wonderful rail network that covers the region. Each day we will walk between 3 and 5 hours with daily ascents of 250m – 600m. Walking conditions underfoot are good as we follow tracks and trails, coastal paths and sections of public footpaths. There are no technical sections on the walks however a couple of the days have some small areas of exposure on narrow “balcony” paths that hug the coastline. As this holiday is centre-based you can choose to opt in or out of each day’s walking, making it an ideal choice for anyone who may want to walk but also have a day relaxing or visiting Genova. Each day there will be time for sightseeing and you’ll only need to carry a small day pack. This walking holiday is suitable for regular weekend hikers.

Why KE?

Today we start with a short train journey (30mins) to the fishing village of Vernazza, in the region of La Spezia, one of the five towns that make up the Cinque Terre. With no roads, Vernazza is one of most authentic fishing villages on The Riviera. The tiny port is surrounded by colourful buildings, a medieval castle and a charming piazza. Today's peaceful trail meanders through areas of olive trees and cultivated fields before entering the town of Monterosso. The largest of the villages that make up the Cinque Terre, Monterosso is surrounded by beautiful reefs and crystal clear waters and the whole town seems to embrace you in Italian hospitality! This is the oldest town of the Cinque Terre and offers a rich assortment of architecture including the Church of St John the Baptist, a chapel, monastery and the newly designed statue of Neptune. We will have some time to explore the town or stroll along the longest beach of the Cinque Terre. Later in the afternoon we'll take the train back to Moneglia, where we will have time to freshen up before dinner.

After breakfast we take the train (40 mins) to Corniglia, the smallest and highest town on the Cinque Terre, which is perched on a small cape 100m above the ocean and is reached by footpaths only. Surrounded on three sides by vineyards and terracing, this ancient Roman village has a long standing agricultural tradition. The path we take climbs through a beautiful pine forest to the hamlet of Volastra, where we are rewarded with splendid views. Our trail then winds through vineyards, where grapes are grown to produce the famous Sciacchetrà sweet wine, and down to Manarola. Built on a high rock only 70m above the sea, Manarola. This charming town has a tiny harbour, picturesque multi-coloured houses, a tiny piazza and steep narrow alleys. From Manarola we take the train to Riomaggiore - the most southern village of the Cinque Terre, famed for its colourful slate roofs. We will have some time to explore before we take the train (40 mins) back to Moneglia.

This morning we take the train (1hr) to Camogli on the Peninsula of Portofino. From the station we walk towards the hamlet of San Roco. The trail is a mixture of forest trails and rocky paths. We'll pass bunkers from World War II shortly before arriving into San Fruttuoso, which can only be reached on foot or by sea. We continue to Portofino, on a path surrounded by pine trees and the native plant of the Mediterranean, the "arbutus" tree. Living up to 500 years, the Arbutus tree can survive in harsh climates and is perfectly at home on Mediterranean Coast. The highlight of today's walk is the fishing village of Portofino. We arrive here in time to enjoy a leisurely lunch and will still have plenty of time to explore. Portofino is a kaleidoscope of pastel colours and is truly a picture postcard location. A lovely place to admire the view is from the Church of St George. A 10 minute walk at the top of the town is Castello Brown (entrance 5 Euro). This old fort was turned in to a villa in the late 1800s by Montague Yeats-Brown, then English consul in Genoa; the gardens are exquisite. In the afternoon we'll take the bus to the village of Santa Margherita Ligure, before we return by train (50mins) to Moneglia.

After a relaxed breakfast we take the trains (5mins) to Riva Trigoso. Lying south east of Sestri Levante, Riva Trigoso consists of two contrasting areas, the old town centre of Trigaso, and seaside Riva. The names Riva and Trigoso were combined in 1874 when the railway line was opened and have now crept into local vocabulary. We'll start by ascending to the viewpoint of Punta Manara. This lovely area, sitting at the end of a promontory, has been a site of environmental protection since 1977. Along the trail there are glimpses of the coast and a rich variety of Mediterranean flora including holm oak, maquis shrub, the flowering arbutus, heather and small areas of evergreen cork oak. Next, we'll walk towards the charming Bay of Silence, which brings us to gem of Sestri Levante. With its pastel coloured houses, pretty harbour and sliver of land connecting it to the mainland, Sestri Levante is a lovely place to explore. Originally a medieval fortified island, the Gualino Castle sits amongst a host of beautiful buildings including Palazzo Cambiaso, Galleria Rizzi, the ruins of Oratory of Santa Caterina and the charming chapel of San Nicolo in Isola.

Today we discover the north coast of Liguria starting with a train journey to Levanto. This charming small town sits on the coastline and is a lovely place to start our hike. There are a number of colourful villas, piazzas and churches to explore plus a long promenade before we take a stone staircase up to the castle that dates back to the 12th century. From here, we join a panoramic trail which passes vineyards, olive trees and fruit trees of plum and fig. The path is good underfoot, with some undulating sections along the way, but mainly we'll be descending. As we leave the cultivated areas we'll gradually enter shady sections of Mediterranean scrub and pine. At the end of the forest section we join a stony path that brings us to Punta Mesco. This viewpoint offers views over the five villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore where we have walked during the week. We then start our final descent to Monterosso "the red village". We'll have time to look around before taking the train back to Moneglia.

We begin today with a bus journey (1.5 hours) to Porto Venere, which translates as "Venus Harbour." In the province of La Spezia, Porto Venere was added to the UNESCO World Heritage site list in 1997 and is the gateway to Isola Palmaria. Perched on what is called the Gulf of Poets, due to its connections with Bryon, Lawrence and the Shelly, the town is famed for the pretty seven and eight story pastel painted houses that frame its harbour. On the headland, a sign points out Byron's cave, the Grotta Byron, where the poet composed The Corsair. All that remains is a pile of rocks, but when Byron was at Porto Venere one of his achievements was to swim across the gulf to visit his friends, the Shelleys in Lerici! There will be time to wander up to the fortress and explore the town either before or after the boat trip to Isola Palmeria. It is a mere 10 minute boat ride to Isola Palmaria on the local ferry and the view across to Porto Venere from the boat is simply stunning. Also on the UNESCO list alongside two other archepelago islands - Tino and Tinetto, Palmaria is a protected area famed for its rugged cliffs. We dock in the Terrizzo and from here out tour leader will decide which trail we'll take to explore the island. After we take the ferry back to Porto Venere before heading back to Moneglia for our final night. In the evening we will regroup for our final dinner where we can celebrate with an Italian aperitif to round off a perfect week.

The five villages of the Cinque Terre are famed for their colourful cliff-side villages and balcony coastal paths which connect them. The villages are not accessible by any roads which is all part of their charm, however due to this inaccessibility and wild coastal location; the national park authority monitors the path conditions on a regular basis. This means that occasionally the footpaths and trails are closed at extremely short notice. As it is not possible to drive to the villages, a planned walk may need to be changed or modified. These closures can be caused by periods of wet weather, natural erosion and, even to give the paths a rest during busy periods. Although we try to keep all our information up to date, sometimes these changes happen at short notice and the leader may need to revise the advertised walks after your arrival. This means that an element of flexibility is needed for anyone wishing to enjoy the beauty of the Cinque Terre.

TRAVEL TO YOUR DESTINATION

In some cases you may choose to take a ferry and/or train to your holiday start and end destination. Please see further information on Travelling by Train.

If flying from the UK there are low cost airlines available to the start and from the end of your holiday.

To benefit from full financial protection, ease your holiday planning, and avoid dealing with airlines, we can book scheduled flights from the UK as part of a flight inclusive package. Scheduled flights are usually more expensive than low cost alternatives, however potentially less stressful if your flight is cancelled or delayed. If you book flights through KE Adventure Travel we will offset the carbon of your flight.

The group will meet at the hotel in Moneglia.

There will be a single timed transfer from Pisa's Galileo Galilee Airport to Moneglia on Day 1 of the Land Only itinerary.

On the last day of the Land Only itinerary, there will be a single timed transfer back to Pisa's Galileo Galilee Airport.

Anyone may join the group transfers by prior arrangement. Travelling as a group or on public transport saves energy. If this is not practical, we can provide private transfers at an additional cost.

Hotel contact details and an emergency number will be provided with your booking confirmation.

All breakfasts, 3 picnic lunches and 3 dinners are included. During the days when lunch is not included, you can decide if you'd like to visit a local supermarket and pick up some items for a picnic. Alternatively you may wish to treat yourself to lunch in a local restaurant. Each day the group will take time to enjoy a town or village which has a variety of places to buy lunch. For three evenings dinner will be taken in the excellent family-run restaurant in the hotel where we stay. Using local ingredients, the family conjure up a wonderful variety of local dishes and the restaurant is popular with locals and tourists alike. The remaining nights will be free for you to eat as a group in a local restaurant or enjoy some time at leisure.

Water from the taps is perfectly drinkable on this holiday - please use this to fill your personal bottles for your daily activities. We do not encourage the purchase of single-use plastic bottles.

Beakfast in Italy is traditionally continental in style with bread, pastries or cakes, yoghurt, jam and honey served with tea or coffee. Included lunches will be picnic style with local breads and fresh ingredients. Our included dinners will be taken in the family-run restaurant in the hotel and each evening will consist of the "3 courses of Italy." The family prides itself on freshly cooked food and as the hotel is small and friendly, you'll have a menu to choose from, with choices being made the evening before to ensure everything is freshly prepared.

During the days when lunch is not included, you can decide if you'd like to visit a local supermarket and pick up some items for lunch or you may wish to treat yourself to lunch in a local restaurant. On the nights where dinner is not included you will be free to eat as a group in a restaurant in town or enjoy some time at leisure. Part of the experience of any visit to Italy is the opportunity to taste the wonderful cuisine. Liguria is known for its simple flavours especially the world famous Pesto alla Genovese! The surrounding hills are dotted with pine trees which provide the all important pine nuts used in Ligurian dishes. The region is known for its hearty and rustic country flavours with the warm Mediterranean air creating excellent conditions for olives, grapes, corn, herbs, garlic, potatoes, onions and artichokes. Because of the wide coastline, fish and shellfish are frequently used plus the region has a love of pork like its French neighbours. As in the whole of Italy, pasta is important alongside polenta. Pesto is on most menus and often served with fidelini a local pasta cut, long and thin or trenette a flat, thin pasta similar to linguine. Gnocchi can also be found and is delicious! Alongside food, Italian wine is excellent and an important part of any meal! Italy is also famous for its aperitifs, from chilled prosecco to campari, vermouth and cinzano all served over ice. Don't forget the zesty local limoncello and the famous after dinner fiery grappas!

Accommodation is twin share. If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired with another single client of the same sex. Single rooms are available for a supplementary cost. If you are planning to extend your holiday, additional nights at the group hotel are available on request.

We spend 7 nights in a comfortable, family run hotel in Moneglia with an excellent location. Although simply furnished all rooms are en-suite with a small balcony.

A mere 50m from the sea, the hotel has a small bar where a pre-dinner drink can be enjoyed and is a short walk from the train station, shops and local cafes.

The hotel has a family run traditional restaurant, which specialises in local Ligurian dishes and where we will take dinner each evening.

Accommodation is twin share. If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired with another single client of the same sex. Single rooms are available for a supplementary cost. If you are planning to extend your holiday, additional nights at the group hotel are available on request.

The group will be led by a professional and qualified tour leader.

Approximately €200-€300 should more than cover all miscellaneous personal expenditure including drinks and wine with dinner as well as reasonable tips for the leader and restaurant staff. You can withdraw cash (euros only) from ATM's at Pisa Airport and in Moneglia.  If you intend to travel with cash, you should take this in the form of euros.

Tips do not form part of the wages of local staff but they are very much appreciated. It is important to remember that tipping is voluntary and should be dependent on good service. It is best if the tip is given at the end of the trip by the group as a whole. We recommend that each group member contributes around €10 – 15 to a group pool and that tips are then distributed between the guide and other support staff as the group feels is appropriate. It is a good idea also to have small change for other tips such as in restaurants or for porters carrying your bags at hotels.

There is no weight limit, other than that imposed by the airline. We ask you to restrict your luggage to one main bag and one small daypack.  A KE trek bag may not necessarily be the best option for this trip and we recommend a bag or suitcase with wheels for this holiday.

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in the ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

Europe

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)

  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For the latest details on visiting countries within the EU or the European Economic Area (EEA), please check the UK Government website

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required, and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check for the latest advice before travel. For the most up to date information on entry requirements, please visit the UK Government website.

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as 'adrenaline auto-injectors' are not carried as standard by KE leaders and staff. You should inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

It makes sense to spend some time before coming on an active holiday getting some additional exercise. Whilst regular hiking in hill or back country is the best preparation however, walking, cycling and swimming are also good for developing better cardiovascular fitness and stamina.  Before departure, we suggest that you try to fit in a number of daily walks in hilly countryside.  It is always a good idea to spend some time walking in the footwear you are going to use on this holiday.

Liguria has a typical Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters due to the ring of hills just beyond the coast. This combined with the influence of the sea creates a pleasant climate all year round. The average winter temperatures are around 6 - 11 degrees, with spring and autumn temperatures ranging from 15 - 20 degrees.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that before travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates directly from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use.

A beautiful coast ★★★★★

This was an excellent holiday with a lovely group (only seven of us) and great weather. The walking days are quite short (other than the first day) but the terrain is steep and it can be quite strenuous in the hot weather. Several folk opted out of some days because of this. The guide (Marco) was one of the best I've ever had - caring, knowledgeable and highly professional. He also carried the picnic lunches for all of us and they were superb! Moneglia is a lovely town with an excellent san dy beach. The train travel worked well though the combination of train and bus on the last day meant a great deal of time was spent travelling. The weak spot was the hotel. The rooms were clean if a little basic and the breakfasts were fine, but the dinners were frankly poor. When did you last have chicken nuggets since you left school? Please KE - change the hotel!

A great Spring or Autumn escape to see lots of LIgurian coast from one centre ★★★★

This is a fun walking week making the most of the relatively short train connections along the coast between Genoa and La Spezia. The famous Cinque Terre villages and footpaths are fine to see but the other day walks - in Portofino, Sestri Levanti, Levanto, Port Venere etc are less touristy and if anything better. The walking is often quite steep and rugged but days are not long and the 'home' village of Moneglia and cosy family hotel make a great base.

Very Enjoyable Trip ★★★★★

I enjoyed this hiking trip. As was the case with my previous KE trip, the guide (Marco) was outstanding. He was friendly and informative and he had excellent knowledge of the area thanks to his degree in history as well as the fact that he is from Genoa. He likes to say that his English is bad but the truth is that his English is just fine (just some minor things here and there). He is truly a nice guy and a pleasure to be around. The walking was great. I expected walks that were not very strenu ous and I was pleasantly surprised to find that some days were a bit more strenuous than I expected. I don't know if this trip should be bumped up a grade but there are days that involve quite a bit of up and down even if the distance is a bit shorter than what I would typically do. The hotel was clean, basic, and authentic. The family that runs it were always friendly and helpful. Breakfast was as expected in Italy, Marco did a good job with the picnic lunches, and dinners were ok. We did go out for pizza one night and a smaller group went out twice. The family also owns the bar (pub) next door and we definitely made use of it! In short, I found this trip to be quite enjoyable and I would recommend it if it interests you.

Fantastic ★★★★★

Just back from this marvellous holiday. The organisation by KE was tip top and the accommodation a very good 2* family owned hotel. The walks were tremendous but if honest more challenging than their Level 3 rating. Two days particularly heavy going. In fact I took a day off to lay on the beach and swim. I think some walkers would struggle if they expected top end of easy. The absolutely best memory was our fantastic guide Marco Moraglio. What a gentleman - so kind and nothing was to much troubl e. Would highly recommend this just get your fitness levels up first.

Very Enjoyable Trip
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Fantastic

Just back from this marvellous holiday. The organisation by KE was tip top and the accommodation a very good 2* family owned hotel. The walks were tremendous but if honest more challenging than their Level 3 rating. Two days particularly heavy going. In fact I took a day off to lay on the beach and swim. I think some walkers would struggle if they expected top end of easy. The absolutely best memory was our fantastic guide Marco Moraglio. What a gentleman - so kind and nothing was to much troubl e. Would highly recommend this just get your fitness levels up first.

Fabulous holiday!

I would definitely recommend this trip to Liguria as an excellent walking holiday. Each day the walks were enjoyable and were rewarded by amazing coastal views. The hotel and food were also very good. Our guide, Isobella, was excellent: very friendly and did a great job of tailoring the trip to our specific group. She was very knowledgeable about the local area, which made the walks all the more interesting. Although some of the sections of the walks were up/down hill, they were rewarded by stun ning views and scenery, which made it all worthwhile. Thank you KE for a wonderful holiday!....

The best walking holiday ever :D

From start to finish this was an excellent trip! The fantastic weather all week certainly helped us enjoy ourselves but other highlights included: - Stunning coastline and uninterrupted views of the ocean. - Challenging walks but also plenty of rest stops for cappuccinos, gelato and Aperol! - Exceptional picnics at carefully selected locations by our wonderful guide Isabelle. From outside churches at mountain peaks to island beaches. Every day had a colourful spread of different italian breads, meats, cheeses and fruit. As well as wine to celebrate after the morning climb! - Tours of local villages where we learnt about local traditions, culture and history. - Itinerary tailored to best suit the weather, group preferences and tides (for boat trips). Although not necessarily in line with the itinerary published in advance by KE, the flexible approach employed by our guide Isabelle meant that we could get the best experience possible. - Family run hotel which offered a comfortable stay and very warm welcome. Dinners included all the favourites - pasta, pesto, meatballs, lots of seafood and of course more gelato! - A chance to meet new people of varying ages from all around the world and enjoy the experience together. - Transfers from the airport were smooth, comfortable and on time. We would highly recommend this trip and are already looking into our next trip with KE. Laura and Rachel

Rewarding treks with stunning views
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I was a bit apprehensive about this walk after reading the initial reviews, however my fears were non founded. The walks were mostly grade 3 however there were a few days that were grade 4/5. All of the walks would start with a steep ascent from a village and eventually we would reach a plateau where we would have our picnic lunch. The views were stunning and breathtaking, and made the ascent worthwhile. Our guide Isabelle always made sure that the group were prepared for the walks in advance, a nd even after discussion changed the itinerary ,so that Day 1 was moved to Day 3 to allow us to become familiar with an easy grade of walking before the strenuous walk that should have taken place on Day 1. I think all of the party agreed that this walk was the hardest of them all, so much so, that we were unable to complete the planned route, and had to complete the route by taking the boat to Portofino instead of ascending the mountain again. It would be better for KE to change this route by either staying up high on the mountain and proceed on to Portifino, or descend down to San Fructoso, 2 ascent/descents is not a grade 3 hike. The hotel was family run, and was very personal. Food was excellent, great choice for breakfasts, and the evening meal would usually have a pasta which was plentiful and tasty. Our guide Isabelle was always busy sourcing the local shops for our ingredients for our picnic lunch, which was always the highlight of our walks. She was very knowledgable about the area where we were walking, and was always able to answer our many questions. The group's ages were in the range of 24-75, and we all had a great time getting to know each other along the paths.

Highly recommended , a wonderful holiday !
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I have just returned from a fabulous week walking in, on and around the Cinque Terra in this beautiful area of Liguria , Italy . The family run Hotel was superb with simple, clean rooms, all with balconies,, helpful, friendly staff , lovely homemade meals, and with a great location in the pretty town of Moneglia. The walks were superb and our guide Isabelle deserves special thanks - she was great company , is very knowledgeable about the history and culture of the area, and her picnics were the highlight of the day for me ! Ours days were very well planned and the walks were stunning , some minor alterations were made to the itinerary ,due to path closures, or swapped days over so we didn't do the hardest walk on the first day, and on one day, to take the boat back rather the train so we could see the pretty villages of the Cinque Terra from the sea - Simply Stunning ! Any changes were made only after group discussion and we all agreed that the right decision had been made as Isabelle clearly knows her stuff and this beautiful area very well . Our walks included some steep ups and downs but those were soon forgotten when we reached the top and those views, ...or the bottom and the gelateria !! The opportunity to swim in the sea was a bonus too. This was a great time of year to travel to this area, as I suspect , it could be very busy (and hot) walking here in summer. A wonderful holiday with a great group ,excellent guide, lots of fun, lovely food, scenery , sea and sun. Bella Italia !

An Unforgettable Adventure
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
We fully enjoyed our 8 day hiking/walking tour in the region of Italy known as Liguria. Exploring the Cinque Terre and other towns and villages of the area was a definite highlight. We had challenging ascents and descents and were rewarded with stunning views. We navigated the area by train, bus, and boat as well as many many steps. We stayed in a lovely family run hotel in the town of Moneglia. The accommodation was clean and comfortable and all meals were full of flavour and local ingredients. The staff was friendly and helpful as well. Our guide, Isabelle, was integral in making the tour a success. She is a positive, energetic, and knowledgeable person who was always available and willing to change our routes or days to suit our wants and needs. She is a caring and funny person with whom we shared many stories and much laughter. If you choose this holiday, ensure that you are physically ready for average ascents of 400 m a day. The paths can be rocky and narrow and the heights can be intimidating at times so wear good hiking shoes that will take you through entire day.

Amazing holiday but the difficulty level needs adjustment
★ ★ ★
We were the first group to participate in this walking tour. I could have given the tour a higher rating as the scenery was spectacular, the hotel location and staff were superb and our guide was amazing but the tour, in our opinion, had a difficulty level which far exceeded that which was advertised. This is a not a tour for the "weekend hiker". We walked 6-9 hours a day in very difficult terrain. You must either climb a mountain or descend a mountain - there is very little flat walki ng. I would recommend training in advance. I have been walking daily for 20 years (in a flat environment) and I found the hiking quite challenging. You will need good hiking shoes, a hat and plenty of sunscreen as it is often very hot on the mountainsides. The food was incredible and the family run hotel was quaint and comfortable.

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for your review. The level of the walking on the Cinque Terre should be as described but we do understand that it may have seemed more difficult than expected if you are used to doing your hiking in a flat environment. We are speaking to our local agent and your guide to assess whether we should increase the grade of the trip in light of your feedback. We are very pleased that you found the scenery "spectacular", the hotel location and staff "superb", and your guide "amazing".
