Awesome, amazing, challenging, great scenery, lots of laughs, very well lead
The Ultimate Everest Trek
This was a "once in a lifetime" trip for my 65th birthday. Reaching this age meant that long-held ambitions just had to be sorted while I could. Just looking at the brochures from a couple of recommended companies was one thing, but wandering into the KE office one dark December morning and talking to Vanessa fired my enthusiasm. So I booked on the "Ultimate" trip to see a bit more on a circular route and also so I wouldn't feel as though I had missed a lot once I return ed. Pre-trip information and booking was good and easy to follow. New kit was bought but the question remained, would I be fit enough ? On arrival our guide, Phurba, saw that getting from arrivals was smooth and I was pleased to find our group of 5, all of similar ages and experience, got on well instantly. Bob and Jan had flown in from India but Mark and son Andy only arrived really late but were still accommodated by the guide and hotel). The first night was comfortable in the Shankar hotel. Progress through to the flight to Lukla (AMAZING experience!) went smoothly despite the rescheduled itinerary. Initial trekking was straightforward but so interesting in Alpine scenery. The early Lodges were good and a gentle introduction into the cold sleeping arrangements, variable water supplies and sanitary conditions found later. Acclimatisation stops were also essential and a good chance to look deeper into the local facilities (who would guess we would find such superb Apple Pie in Macchermo !). The Down kit provided by KE started to come into its own above here as the temperatures dropped in the unseasonably wintery conditions. Gokyo resembled the bleak South Georgia Whaling station under snow and ice as we arrived, but the early morning slow tramp up Gokyo Ri was rewarded with the most spectacular views. What an incredible but lung-bursting experience ! The lodges and facilities became even more basic from here as we entered the hardest, longest days of the trek. The Cho La pass was epic and with soft snow on boulders and loose rocks was quite demanding. Probably better crampons would have helped. The pathway through the soft snow was precarious alone. But absolutely magnificent in the sunshine. Joining the main basecamp trail up to Lebouche made us realise how busy that was (said with a smug sense of satisfaction !). From there it was another rocky climb amongst the Sherpas and Yak trains plus other trekkers (going both ways) to Gorak Shep, then onto Basecamp. This would have been the highlight except for Bob who had been struggling with a heavy cold. Thankfully we had additional Guides to help him back to the Lodge. Looking over the site and surrounding mountains all brought the whole picture to life, with Phurba explaining how it all worked. The weather turned as we came back but that seemed to add to the atmosphere of the trek. Next day's trip up Kala Pattar was cut short by the early bad weather but thankfully, Bob (with Jan) made it to basecamp together. The views were still terrific. The revised schedule meant we had 3 long days to come down to Lukla, but that didn't matter: we saw new sights (Ama Dablam from all angles is magnificent) but had achieved our goals. Even in cloudy weather, the occasional view of the mountains peeking through was stunning. On return we could only be most thankful for our assistant guides, Pasang and Nima plus the Porters who had carried our kit with such smiles. We deserved our first cans of Sherpa beer that night! Return to Kathmandu started with the excitement of the flight from Lukla then the bus through the countryside into the extensive suburbs of Kathmadu. We enjoyed the hospitality of the excellent Shankar hotel before saying a final thankyou to Phurba. He had been brilliant. Not only guiding us but informing us of the features and culture of the mountains and Sherpa people, as well as caring for our well-being (oxygen levels, health etc.) plus all the organising (and reorganising) required. What a guy. Would I recommend it - YES ! The journey is amazing, the people great and experience out of this world. But you must be prepared for very basic lodge conditions, especially washing & sanitary arrangements. Good boots are essential. And yes, despite the effects of altitude (sleeplessness, headache, thin air) I was fit enough and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.

Dream come true
Everest Base Camp Trek
Trekking trip to Himalayas was always my dream destination, and April proved to be an amazing time to visit Nepal. I was nervous about long trip at first, especially that I have never traveled on my own that far, but first out of the Kathmandu airport I was welcomed by Sherpa Prem, who was a leader of my trip. Prem and his two assistants - Saroj and Kalem, were looking after us along the trek, and I can't imagine more attentive, warm, welcoming, and helpful team. Guiding the group, assistin g with meals and lodges arrangement, and genuinely caring for everyone to have the best experience during the trek. Prior to the trip I have contacted KE office several times and every time chat was informative and helpful, so I felt well prepared for my journey. I also appreciate time planned to acclimatise - I believe this was essential for the group to become comfortable with the altitude, and as result, helped us to reach our basecamp destination. Overall the trip was everything I expected and more - views are breathtaking, experience unforgettable, people kind... so just to warn everyone - really hard to come back to reality after 3 weeks of such life changing experience!

A great adventure with beautiful landscapes and a sense of achievement to trek i
Jordan's Dana to Petra Trek

Petra is rightfully a 7 World Wonder but has really changed. It is a crazy environment with tourists, horse and carts, camels, horses and donkeys competing for space around the site. Petra is huge and best taken in small chunks over a few days.

Walking in Portugal
Timeless Trails of Portugal's Algarve
The highlight of this trip - as noted by other travellers - were the hosts and accommodation. Jonny and Violetta are extremely warm, hospitable and friendly and went out of their way to make guests at home. Jonny was great company as he guided us on the walks and Violetta's food was extremely good and very generously portioned!! The setting on the farm is beautiful and tranquil and there is some lovely coastline in the area. The walking itself is probably closer to a Grade 3 (which wasn 9;t an issue for me as I just wanted a nice break away) and was pleasant. The coast line and cliff-top walks were my favourite. Jonny was flexible with the walks and was able to suggest longer routes for those that wanted to extend the day's walking. It is probably worth highlighting the dogs and cats on-site. The dogs are all very friendly and for me, as a big dog lover, this was a big bonus on the trip. Thank you for a lovely holiday

Sunshine, great hikes, super tour leader
Trails of the Amalfi Coast

Extremely enjoyable week spent in and around Amalfi Carlotta, the tour guide, was absolutely sensational. Great knowledge about flora, fauna, history, politics, geography - an absolute fountain of knowledge Only slight downer was the hotel. Not for the first have I come across a hotel which believes that 'single supplement' paying customers should be allocated a small dingy room.

A life changing experience
Annapurna Circuit and the Thorung La

I had the greatest adventure on this trip, completing Thorung La Pass was a highlight, but the sheer beauty of this country, magnificence of all the landscapes, friendly people, superb guides and porters made it the holiday of a lifetime. Thank you KE

harder than expected
Jordan's Dana to Petra Trek
I think the KE difficulty rating for this holiday was optimistic - I should put it a couple of notches higher as there was some quite difficult terrain. It was a shame that there were only stools to sit on in the tents, so no backrests for a week. OK if you're twenty, but not at the other end of the age range. Some director's style chairs would have been as easy to transport and would have made a big difference to the comfort factor. Big disappointment was the final hotel at the end of the trek - unlike other hotels in Wadi Musa this was a DRY hotel, just what we didn't need after a week's trek!

Superb Walking Island
Levada Trails and Peaks of Madeira
What a fabulous way to see and experience the varied scenery of Madeira, and thanks to Roberto for being are superb guide, and such a chatty character. Throughout the trip, he shared his vast knowledge on all things associated with Madeira, ranging from culture, history, and origins of the diverse landscapes. The walks ranged from steep zigzagging cliff paths, gentle meanders along Lavada trails, and steep mountain paths, with the highlight being the ascent of Pico Ruivo (the highest point of Ma deira) and the horseshoe ridge-walk around to Pico do Arieiro. It was also good to stay in a variety of locations on the island, enabling us to enjoy the views whilst being transported to hotels, and seeing the different towns where the hotels were located. The hotels we used were excellent, and although some had swimming pools, we didn't find the time to take advantage of a swim. All in all and excellent trip, and if you love walking and high jagged peaks, this is certainly a place not to be missed!

Walking in beautiful, Turkish countryside
The Lycian Way
The timing of the trip was excellent - the very beginning of the season, so places were very quiet. On some days we only saw 3 or 4 other walkers! Beautiful countryside, many different plants. Cool in the morning and evening, warm during the day. There were many sarcophagi and ruined cities which had been inhabited by Greeks then Romans then Byzantines before being plundered by Arab pirates. Glorious swimming spots - definitely bring water shoes! All the accommodation was great - small, empty ho tels or guest houses and the group ate together every night. During our last day in Antalya we visited a small museum in the Old Town which had wonderful Ottoman costumes and old photographs. We also had a Turkish bath at the 600 year-old Sefi Hammam - that was brilliant. A final note of thanks to Ibrahim our guide, who did a wonderful job of communicating his enthusiasm for the history of Turkey and telling us about his own experiences. He also inspired us with his yoga.

More challenging than expected, not a lot of post-ride free time to explore
Road Cycle Tour of Toubkal
I recommend this trip to anyone looking for a challenging week of riding in an unusual place with ever-changing scenery and often spectacular terrain. This being Morocco, have an open mind and accept the place for what it is: do not expect luxury accommodations and modern touches. The riding was more challenging than we expected and we often arrived at the hotels near dinner time. This left little time to explore each place. Our guide Rashid was great but he spent little time on the bike and was mostly in the support van. All of us expected a guide to be on the bike with us every day for the full duration of each ride, and our understanding was that this was an anomaly and usually there is a guide riding the full route each day.

Wonderful walking holiday with lots of history
The Lycian Way
A wonderful week. Well organised by our excellent guide Ibrahaim. Nothing was too much trouble and he shared his knowledge and love of his country with us. The walking was hard and rocky underfoot but the views were amazing. Swimming in the sea at the end of a day walking was a highlight. The accommodation was small and friendly and the food delicious. Don’t expect much sleep in Antalya though as the hotel is very near restaurants and bars and is very noisy most of the night. Apart from that t hough, the hotels were really comfortable and we slept well after a day on the trail. A wonderful group of people and some very special memories. Can’t wait to visit Turkey again.

Superb holiday made even better by our charming guide
The Lycian Way
A fantastic week walking parts of the Lycian Way. Varied and delightful scenery, some long walks (longer than expected/advertised but our guide quickly and correctly assessed the group's abilities and adapted the itinerary to suit us). Every day we made new discoveries about this delightful part of the world. Ibrahim our guide has a a clear and genuine passion for the history and nature of the region which he was keen to share with us. His boundless energy and enthusiasm kept us all going t hrough some long days which always finished with a delicious meal of fresh local food. Accommodation was generally very good and quite varied in style. Thank you KE, and particularly Ibrahim for a truly memorable holiday!

Amazing service from the Bhutan team
The Druk Path Trek

Camping doesn't feel like quite the right description, carpets in the tent, pillows and hot water bottles, fresh flowers on the dining table and evening entertainment from the trekking crew. When the females on the trip decided to go for a hot stone bath, there was a last minute arrangement for the guys to have a try at archery. Nothing was too much effort for the team and it really added to the enjoyment of the trip.
