Overview

From the ancient hilltop caves of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Matera, through the wild loricato pine forested slopes of the Lucanian Dolomites, to the coast at Maratea, where the bright blue Tyrrhenian Sea laps against the cliffs and coves of the shore. This week has it all for children and parents alike. We have a night in a cave hotel, a cookery class delivered by an incredible local Italian cook, an animal tracking walk, river rafting and gorge walking, gelato making, as well as plenty of opportunities for swimming, zip wires, beach time, and some wonderful family meals out, in some of secret southern Italy’s most beautiful towns and villages.

This trip is a taster of one of the wildest corners of Italy. There are some really great activities for all of the family to get involved with, but with plenty of downtime built in too, for independent exploring either as a group, or in your own independent family units.

Basilicata is Italy, off the beaten track. We’ll spend much of our time involved in family friendly activities that will get the adrenalin pumping for the kids, in a safe and controlled environment. All safety equipment is provided throughout, by trusted suppliers. We’ll stay in small or family run functional accommodation, chosen for their excellent locations.

Why KE?

We’re always looking for that next destination, the one that we know families will love, but perhaps haven’t discovered yet. For us, Basilicata is it. This trip provides all of the charm, pristine beauty and ancient history that makes Italy so special, in a corner of the country that few of us will have reached. Come with us on a wild Italy trip like no other.

Itinerary

Independent arrival in Matera where we will check in to our beautiful hotel, and our accommodation for the first two nights of this trip. Some of the rooms here are cave rooms hewn out of the limestone, and the restaurant has a beautiful view over to the white walls and twinkling lights of the stunning UNESCO World Heritage site of Matera old town, also known as the Sassi. If you arrive in the morning, then you'll be able to join an afternoon treasure hunt style tour of the Sassi, a two hour whistle-stop of ancient caves, labrynthine alleys, and nestled churches all finely balanced on the upper reaches of this precipitous hillside. Some dwellings date back to around 7000bc and are thought to be some of the first human settlements in all of Italy.

We'll have a relaxing morning with a lazy breakfast at the hotel and then perhaps a wander around the streets of Matera. Or maybe an independent exploration beyond the town walls to find wild landscapes of rolling hills and shady pine forests. This afternoon we'll join a local hero, and 'maestro cuoco' for a cookery class who, with locally sourced ingredients will help us to cook up a storm of typical local dishes, and once assembled, we will all eat together. Regular favourites include, pasta making, and polpette di pane (a sort of locally made baked dough ball). We have a second night in the hotel tonight, and will settle down here after dinner.

After breakfast and a ninety-minute transfer we'll arrive in the stunning mountain village of Pietrapertosa in the Lucanian Dolomites. We will check into our B&B here, head to the local store or bakery to grab something for a picnic and then set off for Castelmezzano passing through the Caperrino stream and gorge, before rising up into the village perched among the spectacular rock formations that give this landscape it's name. We will explore this beautiful village and enjoy our lunch before heading back across the gorge and back up to Pietrapertosa. The rest of the day is free for you to enjoy at leisure. You might wish to head to the top of the town to visit the Saracen fortress, and admire the views of the surrounding landscape, or for an optional activity for those with a lean towards adrenaline, book onto the Volo Dell'Angelo or 'flight of the angels' zipline across one of the nearby gorges. Tonight we will eat out in Pietrapertosa in one of the great local restaurants here, before retiring to our accommodation.

We'll set off after breakfast this morning on another ninety or so minute transfer into the Pollino National Park to start a beautiful hill walk onto 'the Belvedere.' This hillside is wonderfully wild and our guide will help us to look out for signs and tracks of some of the fauna that call this hillside home, including boisterous wild boar, brave black squirrels and the famed but elusive, Italian wolves. Fear not though, the latter are very tricky to spot and likely to make themselves scarce at the first signs of human presence. Starting on the Piano Ruggio, we will make our way up the hill and into the woods, part beech woodland, and part loricato pine woodland. We emerge at the top with incredible views in all directions, a great achievement for a morning's walk. This afternoon we reach Rotonda and our accommodation for the next two nights, a B&B in the heart of our next picture perfect hillside old town. We'll eat out again this evening in a restaurant recommended by our guides.

This morning we have a transfer after breakfast into the heart of the national park once more, but this time for some water borne activities. We'll start the day white water rafting down the river Lao (a gentle grade which will be fun without being terrifying!), our guides might even let us out of the raft for a swim. This afternoon we're going gorge walking. After getting into our waders, we'll be driven in 4x4s to the start of our route where we can traverse the gorges and river beds of this beautiful woodland world walking through the clear rushing waters surrounding our feet. A fun experience where we're likely to have lots of hilarious, and soaking wet, fun times! All equipment for both activities, including buoyancy aids, helmets, paddles, and waders, is provided on site. We return this evening happily soaked, for a second evening in Rotonda.

We'll have a transfer this morning out to the coastal town of Maratea, known as the pearl of the Tyrrhenian, perched on a rocky coast with a beautiful harbour below. We'll have some free time today to wander around Maratea independently, perhaps with time for a swim or paddle in the bright blue sea, some lunch in one of the harbour restaurants, or maybe just take some time to settle into our cosy B&B in a sleepy square in the old town up the hill. This afternoon we'll reconvene and attend an excellent gelato workshop. The kids will have a great (and probably messy!) time crafting their own flavours and we'll all sample some of our sweet creations before heading out to dinner. Tonight we'll settle in to our accommodation here in Maratea for the next two nights, the final stop on our tour of the Basilicata.

Our final full day on this trip is ours to spend at leisure. The port town here has a wealth of excursion providers, including kayaking and snorkelling and boat cruises, and you may wish to fill your day with one or more of these options, or perhaps you are just ready for a totally relaxed beach day. Take your swimming stuff, a beach towel and a good book, and enjoy a day of relaxation to round out your week.

Our trip ends after breakfast this morning and depending upon your onward journey, you may have time for a final splash in the sea before saying arrivederci to Basilicata, after a week of active adventure in southern Italy's wild heart.

TRAVEL TO YOUR DESTINATION

In some cases you may choose to take a ferry and/or train to your holiday start and end destination. Please see further information on Travelling by Train.

If flying from the UK there are low cost airlines available to the start and from the end of your holiday.

To benefit from full financial protection, ease your holiday planning, and avoid dealing with airlines, we can book scheduled flights from the UK as part of a flight inclusive package. Scheduled flights are usually more expensive than low cost alternatives, however potentially less stressful if your flight is cancelled or delayed. If you book flights through KE Adventure Travel we will offset the carbon of your flight.

Join at the first night hotel in Matera. Transfers are not available, but there is a train station in Matera, and buses connect Matera with train stations and airports across southern Italy for just a few Euros each way. The railway station in Matera is Matera Centrale. The nearest airport is Bari and a bus from here goes mostly hourly and takes around 1hr 15mins. Check timetables for connections before booking your trains/flights.

All breakfasts and 2x picnic lunches are included in the itinerary. Cooking class and gelato creations will also be included as part of the experience. All other meals are at own expense.

Water from the taps is perfectly drinkable on this holiday - please use this to fill your personal bottles for your daily activities. We do not encourage the purchase of single-use plastic bottles.

Italian food is famous the world over. Alongside the regular pizzas, pastas, and gelato, there are many local dishes to try. Basilicata is known particularly for its pasta heritage, arguably the first producer of the famous carb, although Emilia-Romagnans would argue otherwise (!) Regular shapes include cavatelli, as the name suggests, like little caves or hollows (although they look like conch shells on the plate, and orecchiette, little ears, also a rolled pasta shape, perfect for holding the flavours of a wide range of tasty sauces. Inland in Basilicata, these are often meaty and rich, lamb (agnello) and pork (maiale) are used regularly in pasta dishes, but also stews, whereas closer to the coast, fish makes it’s way onto the menu, utilising the fish and seafood caught regularly in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The most beautiful and impactful of local specialities however, has to be the peperoni cruschi. Hanging from sunny verandas all across the region you will likely find strings of sweet red peppers baking dry in the warm summer sunshine. Once dried they are crushed and added to almost anything served on a plate to add a sweet and smoky (but not spicy) crunch to most dishes.

We have selected small independent and family run guesthouses throughout, on this trip, which allows us to be in or near the centre of most of the villages and towns along the way. The rooms are either double or family rooms to fit with your group size, and will be functional but perfectly formed. What these guesthouses lose in facilities, they make up for in location. For example, in Matera we stay in a cave hotel overlooking the Sassi, and at Maratea, we stay in a cosy B&B nestled in a small square in the old town. They are all perfectly placed to allow for easy access to all the activities and entertainment on this great trip in undiscovered southern Italy.

The group will be led by a professional and qualified tour leader throughout. For the rafting and gorge walking, an additional instructor will join the group.

You will need spending money for drinks and meals out. A typical evening meal will cost around 40EUR per person, drinks are similar in price to UK prices, and you may also wish to purchase souvenirs along the way also. There will be ATMs available along the way, but you may wish to change your money into Euros for a better rate ahead of your trip. Card machines are widely used here, and post covid are preferable in many places, as a means of non-contact payments, so a worldwide interest free credit card may also be useful.

Tipping is the accepted way of saying ‘thank you’ for good service. It is important to remember that tipping is voluntary and should be dependent on good service. We estimate around 10EUR per family member.

For this holiday you should take one piece of luggage and a daypack. Luggage with wheels is useful for this holiday. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline.

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in the ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

Europe

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)

  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For the latest details on visiting countries within the EU or the European Economic Area (EEA), please check the UK Government website

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as 'adrenaline auto-injectors' are not carried as standard by KE leaders and staff. You should inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

Vaccinations

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations.

GHIC / Medical cover

UK residents should carry a free Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). This entitles you to state provided medical treatment when you're visiting an EU country or Switzerland. This is not a substitute for medical travel insurance which is vital when travelling overseas.

The currency for part or all of this holiday is the Euro.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that before travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates directly from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use.

It is an essential condition of joining a holiday with KE Adventure Travel that you have a valid travel insurance policy to cover the cost of medical treatment and to protect the value of your holiday in the event of cancellation.  When taking out insurance please ensure the policy you choose covers you for the activities and altitude included in your itinerary.

For appropriate insurance cover we recommend Campbell Irvine Direct.  Please go to our Travel Insurance page for further information and to get a quote.

Please try to keep the weight of your baggage to a minimum. See the ‘baggage allowance’ section for further details.
