A great trip - despite the weather!
Walking Wild Tuscany
Expected a gentle stroll over rolling Tuscan hills in warm, late summer weather but got full-on mountain hiking in atrocious weather however the fabulous accommodation and wonderful food and hospitality made up for the unanticipated elements! The walking can be demanding - especially if you have a fit group and with some scrambling and ridge walking is not for the inexperienced. Our trip leader, Kathy, was more than capable and also great company. The single-centre trip allows people to miss a d ay's walking and stay at the farm so it can be as relaxing as you want. Tips - bring full waterproofs in case you have as bad weather as I had and definitely bring mosquito repellent!

Great trip to mostly very quiet mountains
Trekking the Ridges & Summits of Bulgaria
A very well thought out trip. The busiest mountain was the highest, Musala, which was like Snowdon on a summer weekend, lots and lots of people but it was a sunny Sunday and it's very close to Sofia so easy access for the locals. After that it was much quieter, the Seven Lakes was a beautiful walk, with few people. Maliovitsa was quieter still. It was good to be able to drop straight down to the Rila Monastery, rather than drive for 2 hours round to it, but that was only possible as we had a big group with a driver. The hut at Dark Lake was good and similar to smaller huts in say the Picos de Europa, certainly more basic than the huge places in the Alps, but that is no bad thing in my opinion. The final day to Marble Ridge, Kotelo and Vihren was probably the best day, the 'via ferrata' section is really quite simple, just a horizontal ridge with a big drop off to one side, so it would have been dangerous in the wet, snow or a strong wind, but we had great weather all week in mid September, bright blue skies every day. Our guide, Ivo, always set a good pace and was thoughtful about anyone who may be slower on for example, a section of steep downhill or scrambling, if they were nervous about it. All three hotels we stayed in were very good, the best being the one at Bansko, where we stayed for three nights. All in all a great trip which I would highly recommend to anyone who is used to walking in say the rockier parts of the Lake District or Wales and is able to enjoy being out on the hills for 7 or 8 hour days.

Relaxing coastal walk - Our First KE Adventure
Walking Morocco’s Undiscovered Coast
Good Points - Greeted by Mohammed at the airport with cold water which was a nice touch after the delays within the passport control area. Transfers were easy and dinner was ready for us at the hotel on arrival. Aziz the waiter was very friendly and accommodating. The walks that followed were all well planned and easy going for all abilities on every day, we were lucky with the weather too as it was hot every day. The camel drivers were always helpful and Habibe the cook produced enough food for a small army at every meal. Mohammed was knowledgeable and guided the team well throughout the trip. The tents provided for camping were of good quality and were erected ready for each evening, there was even a toilet tent!
Each walk contained plenty of rest breaks, sometimes for two hours during siesta time due to the heat. Swimming was there for those brave enough to jump in to the Atlantic. Lunch in the Berber Village home was a nice treat and we were hosted well during our time there.
Essaouira was a quaint fishing town / harbour, we were all booked in to a Riad that was quite fantastic after 4 nights camping. The rooms were lovely and spacious and the showers were a welcome addition :)
Marrakech Souke guided tour was very informative and our guide knew the 6 miles of old market intimately which was good as it can be intimidating to lone tourists.
Our parting meal in Morocco with Mohammed was exceptional, especially the 'Pastillas' which were really tasty, it was a shame that Mohammed wasn't able to stay to the end of the meal due to travelling home.

Not so good points - we weren't informed of the need to take water purifying tablets, perhaps we should have researched this further before our trip but there was no mention of it on the itinerary.

Hints / Tips -

Plenty of wipes
Shampoo for sea water use
Water purification tablets

Perfect for any Great Game fan who loves the mountains.
Mountains and Marvels of Central Asia
After most of my friends thought I might end up abducted and put on parade in an orange jump suit it was a completely relaxed atmosphere throughout! The lakes in the Fann Mountains are particularly beautiful and the north facing Koliakul wall leading to the Chimitarga summit has a similar dimension and appearance to the Eiger from Grindelwald. The organisation in Tajikistan is raw but worked fine. The food was uninspiring with plenty of carbohydrates (eg Plov) but little protein - could have don e with more eggs. Crew very friendly and enjoyed their Independence Day anniversary in most "UnIslamic" style. Although grade 5 1000m ascents and descents, but probably fair as only 5 days of actual trekking. Uzbekistan cities lived up to expectation, especially if you like blue tiled madrassahs, mosques and mausolleums. All hotels v close walking distance to main sites and one in Bokhara in memorable old building. Food was very good in many places with tasty breads, salads, dumplings and kebabs. However intestinal trouble remains a problem, probably Giardia (take a one-off dose of Tinidazole 2 gram with you in case) with 10/13 of our party with afflictions at various stages. Good to go now as Fann Mountains remain isolated and empty and Uzbekistan not to commercialised.

KE Adventure reply

Thank you Martin. We are so glad you enjoyed the Fann Mountains. We agree with you that this is one of the most exciting, spectacular and friendly destinations for adventure travel. We love Tajikistan, where you can still feel like a welcome traveller rather than 'just another tourist' and we were pleased to read you enjoyed the combination of mountains and Silk Road cities. That's good general travel advice about stomach problems although fortunately, such instances are pretty rare in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Great Alpine Introduction
Chamonix Alpine Mountaineering Week

A great way to gain skills in both rock climbing and snow and ice to prepare for greater Alpine challenges. Wonderful accommodation and excellent food. Guides tailored the programme to make the most of the weather conditions and to suit the different levels of experience. Fun group, had a really good holiday.

Great introduction to South America
Choquequirao to Machu Picchu

A great trek off the main INKA trail trekking routes. I really enjoyed this trek with several days away from the crowds and camping in some remote and spectacular Andes locations. The guide was very knowledagable about Peruvian history and the environment.

Moderate trekking through a beautiful and varied landscape.
One Week Mount Toubkal Trek
This trekking holiday was everything I hoped it would be. Camping in breathtakingly beautiful locations, perfectly judged pace of trekking (meaning that even the long days felt do-able for everyone),and being spoiled by a team of mules and their handlers who carried everything for us and erected/dissembled the tents every day. Hassan, our guide, was unfailingly cheerful, knowledgeable and judged the timings and pace to perfection. If you are looking for varied trekking then this has lush green h umid valleys, chilly mountains with alpine flora, rocky valleys, Berber village's, steep ascents and descents some days, with other long stretches of flat walking. If you've never been to Marrakech, its a brilliant experience and spending the last night there as a team finishes off the week wonderfully.

Successful climb of Polands high point.
Rysy Weekend in the Polish High Tatras

Good trek in the high tatras. weather let us down a little, so we had to ascend via the Slovakian side. Managed to get some time exploring Krakow, which is a much restored, easy to access town. Can we have more 'long weekend trips' for those of us with limited time?

A real taste of Africa
The Great Southern African Lodge Safari
For anyone looking to visit Africa this is a wonderful and varied trip. The itinerary is extremely well planned and covers safaris in Etosha and Chobe. If you're lucky like us you'll spot the big five! Spotting a leopard up a tree in Etosha on our first day is something we'll never forget. You'll get to stay in wonderful lodges, cabins, tents etc and everyday is different to be shared with new friends on the tour. It's important to have a relaxed and flexible attitude as you'll be travelling in a mixed group spending many hours in the truck between destinations and one night you'll be wild camping and the other in a luxury lodge. Kalunga and Griffiths, our tour leaders, gave us a holiday of a lifetime. They worked tirelessly to provide us with great meals, safaris, local information etc and did their utmost to make the trip memorable. We only wish it didn't have to end so soon!
