Dramatic mountains, and amazing monuments in Samarkand
The Ultimate Fann Mountains Trek

The Fann Mountains have dramatic scenery and beautiful blue lakes. They are well worth visiting despite being fairly hot (most of my cold weather gear never got used) and having quite a few horseflies! The staff were extremely friendly and likeable and we saw few other trekkers. Neil did a first class job of looking after the group and was excellent company as well. Samarkand is hugely impressive (though very hot in August) - and in fact I stayed on to explore more of Uzbekistan.

Well organised, super fun for all the family
Julian Alps Jamboree - Family Adventure
This was our first time with KE Adventures. The whole holiday, from webchatting, through to booking and then travelling was top notch and all went very smoothly. It made the holiday effort-free (apart from the physical aspect of some of the activities!) and therefore relaxing from start to finish. The Hotel Spik was in a fantastic location in the alps. There's a campsite next to it, with a handy mini-market there, plus a childrens' low ropes course. We upgraded to the 4* rooms, which were much m ore modern, spacious and had a balcony and mini-bar (useful fridge for chilling water bottles and beers!) No tea and coffee facilities though, which was much missed. Maybe take a travel kettle if you like a regular cuppa. We managed to get adjoining rooms for us and our daughter. The food was buffet and plentiful choice. But note, no English breakfast tea at breakfast until the weekends! So if you need a morning cuppa, take your own! Swimming pool area was lovely, great pools and jacuzzi open 9am-9pm, plenty of reclining chairs for all. A nice terrace outside the pool for sunny days. Extra charge for sauna/steam rooms. Charge for towels (we took sporty lightweight towels, easy to dry). Spa treatments rooms on 4th floor - We had a massage on the last day and it was excellent. Drinks in the hotel were reasonable. You can drink the tap water in your room. But they will not provide tap water in the dining room at dinner time. You have to buy bottled water, quite expensive at 2.5euro for 500ml. There is plenty of water at breakfast, ionized and flavoured with citric fruit, lovely. The staff were helpful, English generally good. Our KE guides were great. A little formal and serious to start with (I think that's a Slovenian trait), but they soon got to know us and they were excellent. Their local knowledge was great. Nothing was too much trouble to ask. They were available at all times, even when they had left the hotel they were happy to us to call them if necessary. All the activities were superb and so well organised. The walk direct from the hotel up to see the waterfalls was amazing. Quite challenging in places, but an easy pace. You get to refill your water bottles from a mountain stream pump. The youngest member of our group was 10, and did find this walk quite hard, but still managed a swim in the pool at the end of the day! The white water rafting was our highlight. Exciting, slightly terrifying (I was sitting at the front!), but a fabulous achievement for me especially as I didn't think I would be brave enough to do it! We didn't need base layers, as it was 30 degrees that day. You don't need your own shoes either, you get given a pair of boots, plus sleeveless full length wetsuits and a life jacket and helmet. The water is 12 degrees so pretty fresh. Didn't need warm hats or gloves or waterproof trousers either. We did take waterproof jackets out with us each day, and used them a couple of times as the weather can change very quickly, even in August. All in all a fabulous holiday and we would definately book with KE again.

Walking in fine mountain scenery, with a historical purpose.
Walk to Freedom across the Pyrenees
The mixed weather was to be expected in a mountain environment and added both atmosphere and challenge to the route. The overnight locations were relevant and the food was excellent and representative of the region. Sadly the walk had to be curtailled due to the group's fitness, but the guide took the right decision and identified a suitable alternative day walk. The guide's suggestion to cycle to Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges through th Garonne valley on the rest day was a rewarding experience, w ith enough of a challenge and an interesting destination. This holiday has inspired me to complete the Walk to Freedom at a later date.

Stunning mountain scenery and fantastic refuges
Traverse of the Jotunheimen
This is a brilliant trekking holiday, which navigates a really beautiful route through the Jotenheimen National Park, taking in a wide range of stunning scenery, from high snowy peaks to lush green valleys with alpine flowers. The terrain can be challenging at times, as some valley paths are quite stony and wet, so make sure you waterproof your boots and that they have good grip. The accommodation is excellent: the mountain refuges are cosy and comfortable and provide very good food, so everyone can really rest and recharge properly after each day. Snacks and alcohol in the refuges are expensive, so I would recommend taking your own chocolate supplies - and going teetotal for the week! Personally, I found some of the walking quite challenging, due to the need to carry everything, and the rough terrain in places, but the challenge was definitely well worth it, so go for it! Our guides, Jakob and Sofie, were really excellent and looked after us all very well. An excellent trip, which I highly recommend.

Excellent hut to hut mountain trek
Across the Julian Alps to Triglav
This is a really excellent hut to hut high mountain trek, culminating in a reasonably challenging ascent of Triglav. There is a good amount of ascent and/or descent on each of the days, so quite consistent in terms of effort. Beautiful scenery and flora. Our guides - Boogie and David - were excellent. Very professional, good company and both helpful and considerate of the varying degrees of fitness and age in the group. KE needs to update its route itinerary - we bypassed the Skrbino pass as we were told that this hasn't been used for a few years by the guides because of the state of the scree; also, our last hut before Triglav was Planika rather than Kredarica, which also meant that the ascent is done from the south rather than the north. The huts ranged from very good to satisfactory. Razor and Komni, on nights two and three respectively, were the pick of the bunch. All were friendly and service was good. Tips for others - water limited and only one three minute shower available, in middle of week on night three, so take plenty of wet wipes; availability and range of food can also be quite limited so would recommend taking vitamin/isotonic tablets for adding to drinking water for added nutrition/energy, also other food supplements as desired e.g. fruit, nuts etc. All in all a great trek and highly recommended. supplements as desired.

2nd trip even better than the 1st!
Traverse of the Jotunheimen
What a great trip, and what better advertisement for Norway. A stunning place to hike, made all the more memorable by the lodges. Big thank you to Jakob, and Sophie. The trip notes don't really do justice to the winter conditions you can get on the highest peaks. Travellers should pack for -2 degrees on the summit, and some significant snow fields. Most walkers should NOT be relying simply on a summer waterproof jacket!. Armed with this info, others should enjoy it all the more. If there was a s ixth star rating, I would have used it for this trip!

one of the best remote walking vacations i have had
Mount Mgoun Winter Ascent

This was a winter trek but unfortunately there was hardly any snow... however.. the waking in the Mgoun area is awesome, its remote and breathtaking, little discovered by the outside world and I think one of the best areas to feel remote in. Absolutely loved it. When we returned to the gite in Happy Valley the staff had prepared a haman, the experience of getting so luxuriantly clean was unbelievable memorable. Highly recommended.

Superb adventure holiday
On the Tapas Trail - Family Active Holiday

What a fantastic week! From jumping into whirlpools to hikes up stunning rocky passes to swims in beautiful sandy coves... Rosanna our guide has completely converted us to the delights of Northern Spain. The only thing she didn't arrange brilliantly was the weather, but a bit of drizzle every now and then never hurt anyone! We have an 8 yr old and a 14 yr old and they both loved it too.

Awesome Challenging Trek across the alps
Classic Haute Route
If you are looking for a challenge and a never to be forgotten experience in the Alps then this is the trip for you. Combining fabulous scenery both below and above the snowline, challenging days of trekking and stays in atmospheric remote mountain huts. This trip has it all. Our guide Twid (Mike) was a hugely experienced mountaineer who kept us safe and was helpful & friendly throughout. What advice would I give to fellow trekkers (or those thinking about going on the trek)…read on. Trekk ing on glaciers usually means being roped together so everyone has to work as a team. Glaciers have crevasses and skirting around (or over) them requires balance and sometimes a little courage (to jump). There were some occasions where you walk over ice/snow bridges and so being able to think yourself a few kilos lighter comes in handy! You don’t need any experience of trekking on glaciers – I had none. However, a good sense of balance and co-ordination is useful. A good level of general fitness and conditioning is important for this trip. The days can be long and can be extended further if the weather turns bad. This happened a couple of times with us and so you need to be able to push through even after an already hard day. Also you have to be able to get up the next day and do it all again! In our group half were in their 50’s and the rest were in their 60’s so it’s not all about age (or gender). Personally I am a regular gym goer (3-4 times a week) and added in some long hikes at low level (20-30km) plus a couple of long week-ends in the Brecon Beacons climbing up and down Pen-y-fan (trying to hit 1000m elevation gains each day). If it’s good enough for the SAS then it should be good enough for an Haute Route Trekker. Equipment is really important on this trip as you will be carrying all your own stuff. So pack wisely even if like me you like your home comforts. I would definitely target a total dry weight (inc. rucksack) of 7kg as you will then add in water, lunch, ice axe, crampons, harness and helmet on top. Oh and carrying the rope gets shared out as well so you can be carrying between 10-12 kg at times. It is a lot easier if you are wearing this stuff as it seems a lot lighter for some strange reason. Make sure your ruck sack is really comfortable - I used an Osprey Stratus 36 (36 Litres) with a mesh back to keep me cool on hot days. I brought everything on the trip packing list except insect repellent – not many biting insects at 3000m. Here is a couple of extra notes:- + In the first week you can recharge phones at huts however in the second week it is harder so a 2 day power pack may come in handy if you are using your phone as a camera (I did and you can see my pics on the trip page). + I used a water reservoir during the day which allowed me to drink on the go which helped avoid dehydration. However some huts provide a tea (Marche Tea) for free in the mornings and so having a small 1L bottle for this would avoid your bladder getting stained. Water is expensive so free stuff is welcome. + Make sure your boots are well worn in – no-one on our trip had blisters which was a miracle even with worn-in boots. + You can get a litre of hot water in huts for around CHF4 which is the cheapest and most refreshing way to recover from a long day. Bringing your own teabags can save you CHF2. Beers is also refreshing but I wouldn’t suggest you bring your own. + Bring plastic bags or dry stuff sacks in case it rains – I had a rucksack cover but it blew away in a strong gust of wind on day 2 ? + Wet wipes are a good thing to bring as you don’t always get washing facilities (but usually there is cold water available). And finally what is it like to stay in huts? Well communal living & sleeping are all part of the experience. So expect some disturbances during the night. Generally we were in bed by 9pm and up again at 5am (but twice up at 4am). The food was pretty good with a three course meal every night. The huts also serve cake and other snacks - a welcome treat on arrival. WC’s varied in quality, the most interesting & exposed one was at Cabane de Bertol particularly if you had to go out in the night. A good head for heights is needed there. Don’t let anything above put you off. This is an incredible trek with amazing scenery and physical challenge. You will come back changed by your experience – by how you see yourself, what you are capable of and awareness of the impact of global warming on glaciers.

Epic
GR20 Corsica - The Complete Route

GR20, despite being hyped up so much, is an epic adventure. It offers rugged mountains, forests, pools, lakes, and long long hikes. Be fit and have stamina and just enjoy it. The mountain huts have been recently improved, with better toilet and shower facilities, so you can have a shower at any hut. Food is hearty. There is a danger of wild fires in August. All in all, an epic hike, one of the few in Europe.

A great trek with a bit of excitement and challenge at times
Gran Paradiso Summits - Trek the Alps of Italy
This trip started and finished in a lovely chalet in Chamonix. Clean facilities, staff were friendly and the food lovely. I wish I had stayed on an extra day before and after. The trek itself was well planned and had a bit of everything - easy walk on day 1, building up to a proper challenge on the main summit day. Our guide was very experienced and had to change plans purely due to the weather, but we still had a great time as a group. We were very unlucky with the weather and didn't manage 2 o f the 3 summits, but this is the only thing that KE can't control. Everything KE organised was excellent. The refugios were better than expected and food and wine was plentiful. A 1/2 litre of house wine was only 6 Euros, which given the remoteness of the huts, was good value. My only tip would be that weather will always dictate what can be done on any holiday in the mountains so never be tempted to leave the waterproof or warm jacket behind. The KE kit list was spot on even if you think it is overkill sitting at home in the sunshine.

Iceland: The Three Peaks Challenge

If you want to really experience/see Iceland, you will enjoy this tour. Our guide led us on beautiful hikes into the mountains and across glaciers. The third peak is challenging. You will need to be in good physical condition and have the proper gear. On our rest days between hikes, we also traveled to some beautiful locations. The scenary around Jokulsarlon were breathtaking.

Istria- A visual and culinary feast
Cycle the Wine Roads of Istria
This was a five star cycling trip around the picturesque medieval seaside towns of northern Croatia. Meandering through vineyards, cruising the promenades and exploring the many historical buildings of the area, all at the gentle pace of a bicycle. We had some days on quiet country roads, some days on mountain bikes following the old train route of the Parenzana and plenty of time to sightsee or rest in the afternoons. The area, having an Italian ancestry, never failed to provide the most amazin g foods and wines. We took a tour of a vineyard and an olive oil press on route and passed through a renowned truffle region. The routes were very flexible and catered to the fitness of the group with the options for some of the group to push on and some to put their feet up if they wished. A gastronomic treat, with a bit of exercise.

Amazing, active and relaxing family holiday with teenagers! Food and hosts fab !
Family Adventures in the Algarve
Just back from our perfect family holiday in Portugal - genuinely the best we've ever had! With one 12 year old and one 16. 2 other families, who we didn't know but all got on great, a real communal and happy atmosphere. Hosts were so welcoming, with amazing and plentiful food from local chef. Activities were perfect, well pitched, with help from young volunteers - local walk, beach fun, rock climbing, surf lesson, cycling, power boat trip, canoeing down river. But, it was so much more than an a ctivity holiday - if you want to forget any debates about what to do and who's cooking and trying to keep everyone happy and entertained whilst finding time to 'relax' then this is your dream holiday! Time for mums to share an evening glass of wine on the veranda in a cool breeze, hot outside showers powered by solar panels, idyllic setting on organic farm with great sunset views, hammocks abound to read in, fresh water lake on site with zip wire, table tennis, comfortable accommodation - family cottages. Fun party and pizza night! It was so special, bonding and we will always remember it! Thank you to Portual hosts and to KE.

An excellent alpine mountain hut tour
Across Austria's Zillertal Alps
This tour takes you across a number of sharp rocky ridges running north from the main spine of the Zillertal alps. You cross alpine meadows, numerous boulder fields and streams as you ascend to the passes high above the valleys. The walking at times is tough and a good degree of sure footedness and a head for heights (or steep drops) is definitely required. The climb up to the Schonbichler Horn (3134m) was a particular highlight, you start by ascending up some moraine and then cut back to gain a rocky ridge with sharp drops each side, as you get towards the top you have to scramble up the rock face before reaching the pass and the steep drop down the other side – it’s not too difficult and there is a cable to assist you if needed, but by this point you’ve already climbed about 1000m. The huts were excellent, all of different sizes and style, but all equally comfortable and the food was plentiful and filling. Our guide, Arno, was amazing, he was patient, set a great walking pace and demonstrated gentle humour as he dealt with all the bizarre requests and situations we threw at him. If you like rocky mountains, great alpine views and only have a week to spare then this trip is a gem.

Scenic family trek in the High Atlas
Family Teenage Toubkal Ascent, Morocco
We were delighted with our 2 week holiday in Morocco this year (as well as the ascent of Mt Toubkal we also trekked on the beach with camels for a week) Both weeks were organised through KE and their support and organisation was faultless. Although this trip was billed as being a Teenage holiday there were 5 kids on it who were not teens (aged 7-12) but this was not a problem for us as they were cheerful and good company. I can imagine some families might have been disappointed if they thought t here would only be teenaged kids in the group. The walking was in stunning scenery and was well paced for the climate (pretty hot at the end of July) Almost everyone made it up Toubkal (including the 7 year old) which was in no small part because of the experience of the guide. I felt this trip allowed us to learn quite a bit about the local culture because of the nature of the accommodation, the excellent guide and the itinerary. It was adventurous whilst still feeling perfectly safe. I also had the health boost I was looking for with fresh air, sunshine, exercise and unprocessed food. Highly satisfactory.

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for review. We are pleased that you were delighted with your holiday. Our advertised age limit for this trip is 10+. This is because in our assessment, the trip is not suitable for the average family with children under this age. We run this trip in conjunction with our French partners at Alibert, which adds a great extra dimension for our young participants. In France it is illegal to discriminate according to age, so where a younger child can demonstrate sufficient ability/maturity as an older child, they have to be considered for the trip. This is a relatively unusual circumstance and we wrote to everyone on the holiday prior to departure to explain this. We are pleased that in the end, the 7 year old was able to climb Toubkal and also that you found all the children to be cheerful and good company.
