An excellent trip in every way

Mount Triglav Weekend - Slovenia

The minute we were met at the airport we had a feeling that this would be a good walk. Miha, our guide for the short trip, was a relaxed and informative man who spoke excellent English and did everything he could to make us feel welcome and looked after and he genuinely seemed to enjoy our company. He was passionate about his job, the mountains and his country and was a credit to KE. The walk itself was lovely, through some of the most picturesque countryside I have seen, starting off in woodlan d and finishing in the spectacular Julian alps. The summit climb was tough with a degree of technicality but well within our abilities and Miha looked after us well making sure we were briefed and trained on the use of our harnesses and that we stayed safe but still enjoyed the climb. Once back from the Summit we stopped briefly at the refuge for lunch before walking down to the transport. Miha took us back a different way, down through some beautiful pastures with a very traditional Alpine feel, all with the Alps as the back drop to the trees and meadows and a constant reminder of our recent climb. The first nights' accommodation was basic but clean, the refuge again was basic but clean and the final hotel, the Astoria, was very nice, clean well presented air-conditioned rooms with great facilities and a fabulous breakfast. All in all a great trip and one I would certainly consider doing again. Challenging but very rewarding.

A secret mountain paradise in Europe

it felt sometimes when hiring on the pastures towards the Peaks that I was in a paradise with cows, wild mountain goats, vultures and sheep. a couple of days we were completely alone up in the high pastures and mountains and it felt a real adventure. the pace was challenging enough but it still gave us plenty of time to take in the beauty of the landscape.

Beautiful Romanian Walking Holiday

Walking through Timeless Transylvania

Timeless Transylvania walking holiday was the most beautiful, peaceful, fun and fantastic holiday. From the most chilled UNESCO village of Viscri, where we got to watch the cows taking themselves home every night to the peaks above the Transfargarasan highway, Romania was completely captivating. Our local guide Dan was a total delight and we all adored him. The castles of Bran and Peles are just stunning, the wild flower meadows are chocolate box picturesque and the local people are so friendly and welcoming. We LOVED Romania and are extremely happy with this holiday X

Stunning scenery and fantastic hikes in a serene setting

La Gomera - Jewel of the Canaries

This was my first trip with KE and my first visit to the Canaries. It did not disappoint. La Gomera is a fascinating island, both naturally and historically. The hikes were varied, and the scenery was superb. I was accompanied by a fantastic group of people but the real gem was our guide, Enekoiz (Ene). He was professional, knowledgeable, and passionate about the island. Tips: Bring layers because some accommodation does get cold at night. If you are gluten intolerant you will be well catered. I f you think you are going to lose weight on this trip you won't because the food is excellent and the portions are hearty :)

A fantastic high Alpine week, with a great itinerary and lots of variety.

Italian High Level Route

This was a great intro to the Zermatt - Monte Rosa area including some 4000m summits and giving excellent experience for walking roped up and using winter skills with axe and crampons. The mountain huts were of a very high standard with good food! We had an excellent guide in Kathy Murphy, who was very experienced and dealt with any safety of group issues very efficiently. The itinerary is great, and gives lots of variety, and this certainly makes one want to come back for more. KE could have be en a bit more upfront about the considerable extra costs involved in getting to Zermatt, as the list price for the trip of £1295 was very reasonable, but in reality, the actual cost was nearer £1700 by the time one had paid for the train travel on Swiss railways, cable cars and the meals not included.

For the Italian High Level Route, train fares from Geneva Airport are given in the section on 'Joining arrangements and transfers' and the approximate cost of cable cars and non-included meals can be found in the section on 'Spending Money'.

A superb adventure in a stunning mountain area

K2, Concordia and the Gondogoro La

I have wanted to go to the Karakorum for many years having seen photos of K2 and Concordia. It did not disappoint. It's wild, rugged and remote with some of the most spectacular mountains on earth. A complete contrast to areas such as Everest and Annapurna. No villages; no greenery; rugged terrain; wild and untamed as big mountains should be. KE organisation as always was excellent. Great local crew, brand new tents, and a great guide in Tom Richardson. Only disappointment was not crossing the pass because of snow, but somehow it didn't seem to matter!

Wonderful family time

Family Adventures in the Algarve

My family just returned from a trip we will always remember. The website made it look good, but our stay with Jon and Violeta greatly exceeded our expectations. We have two boys, ages 10 and 14. I chose the trip because one of the boys needs encouragement to participate in outdoor activities. My hope was that if he was part of a group and had structure, he would do it and enjoy it -- and that is exactly what happened. He scrambled up rocky cliffs, kayaked, surfed, rock climbed...all things he wo uld have refused to do if it was just us. Our guides were wonderful at gauging our group's abilities and giving us some challenges while also making us feel safe and cared for. Tips for the trip: Bring good walking shoes, a beach towel, athletic clothes, LOTS of sunscreen and a good attitude and enthusiasm for adventure. Tell your office you will not be in touch as there isn't time for emailing and internet is limited -- plus you will want to disconnect with work and connect with the beautiful outdoors and your charming hosts. Also, the food is healthy and delicious -- some of the best food I've ever had while travelling. Can't say enough about this fabulous experience.

Beyond Expectation

Chomolhari Basecamp and the Bonte La

This trip exceeds expectation. The country and the people are wonderful, they are so friendly and welcoming. The scenery is second to none and completely unspoilt. The trip, once you are nearing the top and heading to the pass is tough, especially if you have altitude sickness. It can be very cold, I woke up to snow on my tent, so I would recommend taking a hot water bottle. I had to sleep fully clothed with my down jacket on and I was still very cold. The food was excellent and food hygiene was perfect. The sherpas were amazing and enjoyed sharing any information about their wonderful country. If you want to see and experience the unspoilt Himalayas, then this is the country to visit.

A great trek. First with KE and very impressed.

Choquequirao to Machu Picchu

The trek was well organised from start to finish and we loved the little extras - hot water bottles (wahwahs) every night; flannels and soap with our washing bowls morning and evening and even the 'porta-potty'. The campsites were lovely, especially the one on the terraces at Pincha Unuyoc. The food was as much of a challenge as the walking at high altitude. Four good meals a day - breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner - which were tasty and welcome. Our guide, Daniel, the cooks and porters were all excellent and couldn't have done any more for us. Unfortunately we didn't have great weather for the two days over the high passes, so we didn't get those fantastic views, but other than that and only one condor sighting, the trek couldn't be faulted.

A great trek - disappointing not to summit Triglav

Across the Julian Alps to Triglav

This was an excellent trip with a great group and superb guides in David and Katja. Only downside was not being able to summit. Although nothing could be done about the poor weather on the Thursday afternoon and Friday morning which was the window for the peak, I do feel that the summit attempt could have been prioritised more. The Prehodavci hut was a brilliant experience and I can see why an overnight stop is part of the itinerary but I do believe that to maximise our chances of summiting Trig lav, we could have walked through less than 2 hours to the Dolicu hut. This would have resulted in reaching Planika before 10am and would have massively increased our chances of making the summit which we only missed by around 1 hour. The upside is that I'll have to make another visit to Slovenia in the future to resume unfinished business!

Awesome mountaineering expedition into the Swiss Alps

Classic Haute Route

The Classic Haute has been on my short list for a couple years now, and it exceeded every one of my expectations. It is notably more arduous than any of us had expected. Difficulty level was at times at 10 or 11 with the daily prolonged ascent/descents, but the pay-off's and reward were unobstructed views, breath-taking vistas, idyllic meadows full of bell-ringing cows,charming encounters with cheese-makers, auberge-keepers and cow-herders dramatic scenery only seen on Planet Earth or in th e movies. Our group ranged in age from 30 to 60 and in fitness levels from search-and-rescue mountain readiness to minimally active, but we all managed to complete the adventure. Do as much training as you can manage beforehand because you will inevitably wish you had done more. Why choose this trip? If you are looking for an intense, active, outdoor adventure with unobstructed views and scenery, this ones for you. What would your advice be to potential travelers? Train, train and train some more. You will be travelling with a group for nearly two weeks in circumstances that can put modesty to the test. Grand accommodations do not exist in these parts. Be prepared for the comedy of sharing community showers and bunk bed rooms in the Refugio, sharing bathrooms in one or more of the inns; and showers in your room that may suggest emphasis more on exhibitionism than hygiene. Magic in the Mist

Trekking The Transylvanian Alps

Describing this walking holiday is best summarized by a book I read to prep me for this trip called, "Along the Enchanted Way." Written by William Blacker, it's a memoir written about his time in Romania. Each day I truly felt mesmerized by the people and sights. Our guide, Gabriel, was a true delight - passionate about his country, he regaled us with myths, facts, and his overall sense of good humor. There was hardly a question he could not answer, and he was quick to act when we found ourselves in a hailstorm, still 2 miles from the nearest hut. Gabriel also organized some of our meals with the locals who were generous and kind, and added a special touch to the overall experience. I really liked the variety of the itinerary: hiking 11 hours one day only to find yourself touring a castle or monastery the next day. The hikes were challenging but amazing - our longest day had us traversing up and down ridges, past lakes and patches of snow with sheep bellowing in the valleys below. The weather would change in an instant - sometimes we'd be walking through shrouds of mist only to then be baking in the sun minutes later. Since this was my first organized group trip, I wasn't sure what to expect, but from the booking process to the final "welcome home" email, communication with KE was excellent. They were also very helpful in accommodating a special request by a friend who joined me on the trip. In all, I would highly consider booking another trip with KE again.

Beautiful coastal scenery and fabulous bird life

Far out in the Faroe Islands

There are dramatic cliffs all over the Faroe Islands, and it is easy to see very spectacular scenery without excessive exertion. The bird life on the island of Mykines is wonderful. There are lots of attractive villages with old wooden houses. The food is quite good, especially if one is partial to creamy fish soups and steak! Randi was a wonderful guide, full of insights into Faroese history, culture and folklore. One highlight was her beautiful singing of a psalm in Faroese in one of the churc hes we visited.

A good walking holiday with spectacular scenery

Far out in the Faroe Islands

I have been looking forward to this trip for quite sometime and didn't disappoint on most levels. Firstly, the walks were good but were a little more difficult than expected. Most of the walks had a much steeper and longer ascent than expected as I think some of the trip notes weren't accurate. Therefore, the walks took longer to complete and felt that at times me and a few other members of the group were slowing others down. Secondly, the hotels we stayed at were good, staff were frie ndly and helpful and the rooms were comfortable. I am coeliac and therefore have to eat a gluten free diet because eating in foreign countries can be tricky. However, in the Faroe Islands it was much easier than expected. Each hotel and establishment we ate at I was made to feel comfortable about my dietary requirement and I always had something lovely to eat. Finally, overall the trip was memorable and I would visit the islands again in a heartbeat. The scenery was spectacular and even though at times they were difficult that walks were also great. My two favourites places of the trip were the village of Gasadalur an the Island of Mykines. Both are fully recommended and top places to visit in the Faroes.

Highlights of Namibia, Botswana and Victoria Falls

We were very fortunate to have two excellent guides: Adolf Venter from South Africa and Arthur Mundiwa from Zimbabwe. They worked very hard to make sure we had a wonderful time and their culinary skills were excellent! They fixed two vehicle problems very quickly and, as a result, our tour had only a minimal disruption. Above all, they remained good-humoured throughout. The vehicle is well-designed with good visibility for all passengers and is well-equipped with camping and catering items. Howe ver, be prepared for some long hours in the vehicle! Before our departure, I requested KE to provide a list of the lodges we would be using but was informed that this was not possible. However, Sunways did have a list of the lodges and made this available to others on the tour who booked through an agent in Australia. The Australian agent even updated the list when two lodges were changed! This information would have been useful to find out what facilities might be available (e.g. internet access, laundry facilities).

A wonderful midsummer escape - exhilirating remote walks in dayround light

Walking the Wild and Untamed Lofoten Islands

This trip has so much more to it than most walking holidays. Lofoten is an astonishingly beautiful archipelago of islands which gets very few visitors. Staying in unique fishing villages with easy access to world class trails, you get in midsummer an experience of 24 hour daylight and constantly changing weather/light. This practically guarantees a unique personal experience of one of the most beautiful and unspoilt coastal areas of Europe. As long as you are comfortable with some steep climbs a nd descents and some rough trails underfoot, the walks are all manageable and amply repaid by the sweeping views along the way. Unexpected delights included a rash but fun dip in the Norwegian Sea at the end of long descent to the beach and a 2 am international singalong with the local pub guitarist. The Norwegian guides and 'rorbu' owners are sympathetic and welcoming and take pleasure in giving you a memorable experience. They changed planned days around in the light of weather and added options such as trips to watch midnight sun. Don't expect luxury or consistency in the shared accommodation, but the fisherman's cottages are interesting and individual places to stay and you will eat well everywhere. For mountainous and spread out terrain, the transport infrastructure is great - despite the absence of almost all other traffic - so the couple of long transfers are an enjoyable part of this trip. For anyone who enjoys remote coastal/mountain walking and is looking for somewhere genuinely different close to home, this is a great choice.
