Good trip, hard trip, rewarding trip
Victoria Falls to Cape Town
I'm writing this from a month and a half's perspective since I've been back. First, my husband and I normally do self supported trips so I'm always concerned because the guide and group can make such a huge difference on these kind of deals. The guides were great. They have a really hard job working 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. everyday. Bevan the lead guide was fastidious about our safety and set rules early on that kept the group at a good cadence. He loosened up once he had the group all on track and was very pleasant. Colin and Andy were amazing. I particularly liked Andy's laugh and caught some of it on video that I like to listen to every now again because it makes me smile. The group was pretty good too. It was a really fast group of cyclists. So through Botswana I had to stay on someone's wheel to keep up. That was a bit frustrating because I've never been to Africa before and I really would have liked a slower pace that allowed for more picture taking. I ended up keeping my point and shoot camera in my bra and would grab it out and take pictures on the fly but eventually the camera broke from the sweat. Very frustrating. Namibia in a word is hard biking. The roads are horribly wash boarded. But the landscapes are simply vast and amazing. I would take the hard biking just to see that kind of scenery. South Africa was epic. The bike ride from Cape of Good Hope to Cape Town is a must do. Regarding food - the breakfasts were not so great. Granola and Yogurt. That was pretty much it. You have to get on the road early to beat the heat but it would have been nice to have hard boiled eggs or something a little more substantial. The lunches were ok, not super inspiring but filling...usually cold cuts. The dinners were masterpieces. The guides would usually have some sort of wild game and do some feast of a bbq (a Braii as they call it down there) over an open fire. It was splendid. Logistically, we rented bikes and were so glad we did. The bikes get beat to hell riding on the roads and being on the trailer over such rough roads. The bikes we rented from KE were awesome 29ers that they put skinny tires on for Botswana and then changed out to MTB tires in Namibia and South Africa. We ended up spending a few days prior to the trip in Livingstone, Zambia. I'm really glad we did as it allowed us to get through the jet lag and also visit Victoria Falls with enough time to really see it and hike through the park. We took a microlight flight above it that I highly recommend. We also spent 2.5 days at the end of the trip taking in Cape Town. That was awesome too and the hike up Table Mountain and the views from the top were spectacular. Visiting Robbens Island is a must do as well. Very stirring having a former political prisoner walk you through where they were imprisoned and telling you what it is like. You still see the vestiges of apartheid in Namibia and South Africa. They have a long way to go to get to equality. Some tips that I would recommend KE put in their packing list: Bring some handwashing soap for clothes and clothesline pins. Also I recommend bringing 10 foot or so of light cord for the clothes line. You want to wash your clothes most days. The bathroom and shower facilities were great at each of the campsites. I had a hot shower every day except one or two which was nice. The mattresses they provided were nice too. We had brought extra light weight blow up mattresses just in case theirs weren't any good but we never ended up using them. We also brought down pillows. Basically the sleeping arrangements were like a bed and I slept like a baby every night. Also, you get to see the Milky Way most nights. That is spectacular. I hadn't seen that since I was a kid! All in all, it was a really nice trip and I would recommend it to others.

Memories of a lifetime!
Walking Croatia's Coast and Islands
Outstanding from beginning to end! A faultless journey along the coast and onto some of the most gorgeous islands that you will ever see. Darko, our guide, enriched us with his never ending knowledge of this beautiful country and with such graciousness and expertise..we could not have asked for a better person to guide us to the hills, valleys, vineyards churches, monasteries, city walls and so much more. This man is a natural and a great asset to this company...treasure him well! If you can hik e 8- 10 miles /day this is a must do without a doubt.

Hiking and eating in Macedonia.
Tastes and Trails of North Macedonia
Macedonia deserves to have more visitors. It’s not nearly as well known as it should be. The hiking in the mountains is so rewarding in terms of the scenery - forested mountains and clear lakes wherever you look. And wonderful fresh local food wherever you ate, straight from the hills you have just walked. At Lake Orhid, where the itinerary allows for a free day, there is a variety of options available. Scuba diving an underwater archaeological site, tandem paragliding, horse riding and visiti ng museums are all possible. But I think it would be a good idea if these options were made known to the travellers beforehand so that they could be booked in advance. As well as the excellent hikes, this trip really can be considered a culinary adventure as well.

The Jewel in the Crown
Walking Wild Tuscany

This was my fourth KE Trek and, without doubt, the best in terms of catering (a definite misnomer in this case!) and accommodation. The walking is fantastic, the panoramic views stunning and the guiding exceptional. We were treated like kings throughout and our thanks go to Jamie, Ailsa, Stefano and Agat for making it such a memorable trip.

An amazing encounter with the sights, sounds and smells of volcanoes
Island Hopping Active Family Holiday in Sicily, Italy
This is an incredible holiday in a beautiful part of the world with a tremendous range of volcanic scenery and activity, delicious food and wonderful cities. It was made even better by fantastic weather, calm seas and coincided with increased activity of Stromboli. Rosario our guide was very helpful and reassuring despite not having lead a family trip before. Once he had realised that children need to know exactly what they are doing all the time, there was less anxiety in the group. He arranged for our family to climb Stromboli on the free day - quite a slog in hot weather, but well worth it to gaze down into the heart of the volcanic craters at sunset and see glowing lava flung into the air with a colossal boom. We then had to descend in the dark and finally got back to the hotel after boat and taxi rides at quarter past midnight (hence not included in the itinerary). Rosario also lead extra walks for anyone that was interested on Lipari, Panarea, Taormina and Catania and arranged for us all to see Stromboli erupt at night from the sea on a private boat, rather than take the earlier hydrofoil. He also knew exactly where to find the best ice creams! May is definitely a great time to visit - sunny, but not too hot nor crowded, the sea is warm enough to swim and snorkel in, and there are lots of wild flowers and butterflies. We couldn't understand why it was recommended to take gloves and a woolly hat...until we visited Etna. It was 3 degrees and hailing at one point with a cold wind, but the walk from the top of the cable car was unmissable. We even stood on a very recent lava flow and picked up rocks which were still as hot as jacket potatoes. This trip definitely crams in more than you could possibly manage in the same time if doing it on your own, and if you don't feel like going on a walk, you don't have to do it, but have a lazy day on the beach instead. The accommodation was comfortable with the whole family of four in one room rather than split between two doubles on separate floors as we have encountered with other similar holiday providers. Highly recommended, but it would be sensible to have a reasonable level of fitness.

Tough but exciting trekking and camping in a fantastically scenic area
One Week Mount Toubkal Trek
This is quite a tough hike in rugged mountains with a lot of loose shaley ground and the grading possibly needs to be upped from 6 to 7. It combines reasonably easy paths with some long hard climbs of up to 1300m, and you will need to carry plenty of water. The last full day involves a 4am start to ascend Mt Toubkal before 8am, a quick descent for lunch, and then a very, very long walk-out to Imlil. We didn't arrive until 5pm, and weren't hanging around! The scenery throughout is super b, the local people and villages fascinating, and the food on trek outstanding. For sheer value for money, this holiday cannot be beaten! The only downside was the Marrakech hotel, which though handily situated and with decent rooms, serves shockingly poor quality food. Avoid!

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for a great review. We are pleased you found the food on trek to be "outstanding" and are sorry that on your trip, the hotel in Marrakech was not able to match this level. At the end of the holiday while staying in Marrakech, our groups enjoy a dinner in a local restaurant and we trust you found this as good as the trek fare.

Varied and diverse trekking experience
Walking in the Balkan Borderlands
This was a brilliantly organised trip offering diverse trekking experience in lots of different environments. Our guide Milan was very attentive and thoughtful, had lots of interesting insights to share, made the time to talk to all of us and really added to the sense of unity in the group. He answered all our questions and was really invested in us having a good time, he was absolutely wonderful! I had not done a trip like this before and while it was challenging at times, it was all enjoyable and I learned a lot about trekking differen terrain. The scenery is jaw dropping and people are friendly. I'd recommend staying on in Dubrovnik at the end, I also arrived in Pristina a day early to explore the city, which is not conventionally beautiful but has a good energy about it. If you are planning to wash clothes as you go don't forget a universal plug as none of the sinks seem to have them. People also really appreciate you learning a few words in their language (Albanian in Kosovo and Albania, Croatian/ Serbian- essentially the same language- in Montenegro and Croatia). We were lucky with the weather but I'd still recommend having gear for all weather as I used everything I'd brought!

An Unforgettable Adventure
Footpaths of Liguria - Cinque Terre, Portofino and Porto Venere
We fully enjoyed our 8 day hiking/walking tour in the region of Italy known as Liguria. Exploring the Cinque Terre and other towns and villages of the area was a definite highlight. We had challenging ascents and descents and were rewarded with stunning views. We navigated the area by train, bus, and boat as well as many many steps. We stayed in a lovely family run hotel in the town of Moneglia. The accommodation was clean and comfortable and all meals were full of flavour and local ingredients. The staff was friendly and helpful as well. Our guide, Isabelle, was integral in making the tour a success. She is a positive, energetic, and knowledgeable person who was always available and willing to change our routes or days to suit our wants and needs. She is a caring and funny person with whom we shared many stories and much laughter. If you choose this holiday, ensure that you are physically ready for average ascents of 400 m a day. The paths can be rocky and narrow and the heights can be intimidating at times so wear good hiking shoes that will take you through entire day.

Amazing holiday but the difficulty level needs adjustment
Footpaths of Liguria - Cinque Terre, Portofino and Porto Venere
We were the first group to participate in this walking tour. I could have given the tour a higher rating as the scenery was spectacular, the hotel location and staff were superb and our guide was amazing but the tour, in our opinion, had a difficulty level which far exceeded that which was advertised. This is a not a tour for the "weekend hiker". We walked 6-9 hours a day in very difficult terrain. You must either climb a mountain or descend a mountain - there is very little flat walki ng. I would recommend training in advance. I have been walking daily for 20 years (in a flat environment) and I found the hiking quite challenging. You will need good hiking shoes, a hat and plenty of sunscreen as it is often very hot on the mountainsides. The food was incredible and the family run hotel was quaint and comfortable.

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for your review. The level of the walking on the Cinque Terre should be as described but we do understand that it may have seemed more difficult than expected if you are used to doing your hiking in a flat environment. We are speaking to our local agent and your guide to assess whether we should increase the grade of the trip in light of your feedback. We are very pleased that you found the scenery "spectacular", the hotel location and staff "superb", and your guide "amazing".

tough
One Week Mount Toubkal Trek
Much tougher than advertised. Early starts at 04.30 plus all day trekking. Mostly scree, so hard on feet. Camping okay but terrible unusable toilet facilities. Trek is over ambitious for 5 days. Felt like a forced march all the time. Our guide was a nice person but not interactive or communicative at all. He did not inspire confidence . Hotel in Marrakesh not good. dour staff and dreadful food. Overall disappointed with this holiday and KE, especially having had such a good time in Nepal with KE . This trek should be for 7 days.

KE Adventure reply

We are sorry that you found the trek to be tougher than expected. On the website and in our literature about this holiday, we describe the trip as “one of our most challenging trekking holidays in Morocco” and recommend that clients undertaking it, “should be comfortable with walking for up to 8 or 9 hours each day and for several days continuously”. We have taken on board your comments about toilet facilities on trek and about the food and service from your hotel in Marrakech and we are investigating this with our local agent. We were surprised that your guide Omar did not inspire you with confidence as we are used to seeing glowing reports about him from KE clients. In the interests of balance, we feel we must point out that all feedback we have had so far from other members of your group is extremely positive and includes the following comments about Omar: “Excellent guide – funny and sensitive to the needs of the group (and individuals)”; “Very knowledgeable and interacts with clients and muleteers very well”; “Omar is an outstanding leader”; “Omar was always helpful and pleasant to be around. In particular, I appreciated his considerate pace setting on summit day which saw all of us who attempted it safely at the top.”

A great trip but Iceland is a wet and windy country!
Iceland: The Three Peaks Challenge
Excellent trip, great guide, great food (including some local specialties). Iceland is extremely photogenic as a country but it is also very wet and very windy. We only had one day of relatively ok weather in our week and this seems to be more the rule than the exception. Of the three peaks, we had to turn back on the first one because we were about to take off given how strong the wind (and the horizontal rain) was, we did not summit Hekla because of wind and clouds. But three of us got to the highest point in Iceland. This was a great and fun day although we had no views at all and walked in the caldera in a complete white out! The hikes were complemented by great excursions and sightseeings which led to a great trip overall!

Wonderful walks and a lot of fun
Levada Trails and Peaks of Madeira
This was a great week of walking - every day was quite different, and it felt like we saw a lot of the island in just a week. The walking wasn't difficult, but it was really interesting - mountain climbs, levada walks (just because they are flat doesn't mean there's not plenty of excitement still to be had!), coastal walks, and some steep ups and downs. Lots of different types of flowers and plants to spot each day (and our wonderful guide Roberto knew every single one). Even if t he forecast is for sun, sun, sun you will still need your waterproofs for some of the walks (but I don't want to give some of the surprises away!) The last day climbing the high peaks was my favourite - we were up above the clouds in the sunshine, and the path that wove up and round the mountains was incredible (if a little busy in places). Madeira is a lovely place to visit - nice hotels, plenty to see, delicious food, and great mojitos in the beach bar at Paul do Mar to drink while watching the sunset over the sea.

An explosive experience

The highlight was definitely the trip up Stromboli to the volcanic eruptions. A truly awesome experience. Rosario, our guide was excellent. His knowledge and enthusiasm for his native Sicily added immensely to the holiday. We enjoyed great culinary experiences with Rosario ably helping us to sample Italian and Sicilian food.
